I have access to a totaled '99 explorer but its a v6.
How can I find out what rear end set up it has, and does it have the same size axles?
Thanks
Landy

If it's an 8.8 rear it should be the same. I highly doubt the axles will fit, probably the wrong length.

I believe the Explorer has a 31 spline rear end.

Yes the Explorer has a 31-spline rear end. Axles won't work but the diff would. If you get it, rebuild it with the cobra clutch pak and new spider gears if need be.

thanks birdman, i guess i may as well get the differential and rebuild it since is the most expensive part of it.

I rebuilt my clutch packs with a 97 F150 clutch pack. Much tougher than anything out there.

the 2006+ ford crown victorias have 31 spline axles from the factory. you can install them into a 2003-2004 marauder if desired.

I just did this swap. The carrier from the explorer is 31 spline and should be a limited slip. If you want to save money, take 2 of the clutches out of your 28-spline and put them in the 31-spline carrier. Install clutch, shim, clutch, shim, clutch ,shim, clutch, shim on each side. +1 on the 2005 and newer cv axles.
