I wanted to tell everyone about the results of my experience with the SCT Pro Racer Software that just came out, my experience with Jerry W. and SCT itself, and the awesome power and flexibility of the Trilogy kit!!!!!!

However, I first wanted to comment on the art of tuning itself. There are of course “different ways” to tune a car and “different circumstances” for which you tune a car, thus the reason for the existence of flip chips and flashers for those that want the ability to tweak their car according to the situation at hand. With that in mind, I have been looking at the tune that came with my Trilogy kit with an OBD-II and Wideband O2 to see how it performed in various circumstances. I have to say, it is an “excellent” all-around tune. It has nice shifts and a quick kick-down without being too aggressive or unwieldy. It also does a pretty good job on the highway as far as gas mileage goes and gives me a wonderful balance between power, drivability, with a great focus on “longevity” so that my motor will last as long as my car. Also, for those of you that own or are considering a Trilogy kit, you have the option of getting with Lidio of Alternative Automotive and making customizations to your chip to better suit your taste at any time.

I however, wanted to play around with the tune myself to not only learn the “art” but to be able to change “little” things as they popped up with a minimal amount of fuss. Thus, I went out and bought the SCT Pro Racer Package (from http://www.superchipscustom.com ) to see what it and I could do.

Well, I received the software and played around with it for just a few days before my S/C kit came in on my stock car. It was really cool to be able to modify things at will, re-burn the chip, and pop it back in within a 5 – 10 minute span. Then I got busy strapping on the S/C kit and decided I would reconvene with the SCT package in a month or so after I had made sure that my stock blower package was working to perfection.

Needless to say, things didn’t go according to the plan :). First, the Trilogy install went so flawlessly and was running so good out of the box that I felt more than safe. Second, I had emailed Jerry about getting a “tune” for my blower setup to play around with later and to my surprise he sent it to me via email immediately! Well, I had a down day before I left for vacation and decided to play around with it to see what I could do as far as an “all out race” tune with really aggressive shifts etc. I ran into a couple of problems with the A/F, mostly because of the funky MAF that we have. Jerry worked with me and sent me 2 or 3 files to try and we ended up getting it really close before I had to call it quits. Now I have to mention here that Jerry could have probably nailed it earlier if it wasn’t for the sparse info I was sending him from my data-logger. The major problem with most of these is their limited frame capture time when trying to pull multiple values simultaneously. Now that is where the upcoming SCT data logger is going to make your head spin, it looks to be a masterpiece!

Jerry then emailed me while I was on the road with something that we were talking about and I responded that I would take a look when I get back as I was on my way to Ohio. He replied and asked “where in Ohio” as he was in Detroit. It ended up that he was only 4 hours away from Cincinnati. Well, the next thing I know he has offered to meet me at a Dyno shop on Saturday (after Thanksgiving no less) for a full dyno tune using my software and to show me a few pointers at the same time! Talk about service! He ended up driving 30 – 45 minutes to meet me on a Saturday, then spent 4 hours getting it perfect (counting BS time as well :))!!! I just can’t say enough about SCT, Jerry, and their commitment to getting the job done! He is a really good guy and was willing to bend over backwards to support his customer and product.

Well…… The end results of my dyno tune were 434 RWHP and 399.1 RWTQ!!!!!!! (SAE no less, Standard was 444 RWHP). And I still feel there was just a tidbit left as this was after 6-8 dyno pulls and what I considered “not enough” cool down time for the final run, as the engine was still fairly warm, but we had spent enough time at that point that I did not feel right holding Jerry up any longer. It is also a tune with our freaky MAF that hits a voltage plateau before it pegs and levels off in a very weird way even though more air continues to flow. Essentially, when this happens you have to ask for a richer and richer mixture versus modifying your MAF Transfer Function table the way you should. That thing is going to come off very soon and get replaced with a lightning MAF, but pronto.

And that is only part of the good news.. You talk about packing a whallop! These damn Eaton blowers produce the flattest curves I have ever seen. At only 2,500 RPM this baby is producing 360 TQ and 180 HP, no wonder this thing launches like a rocket!!! You should have seen the guys at Dave’s Dyno, they were doing double takes! This just goes to show you what this package can do!

I was absolutely amazed! The way I look at it, I have a great “all around” tune that came with the kit. Actually, as good as you can possibly get without actual dyno time and Lidio’s or any other tuner’s personal attention. It will keep me safe, it will provide excellent drivability, and it will still afford me a very high level of “on demand” performance.

I also now have my own tuning software that will let me make changes over time as my mods change. It provides me with my “race” tune; with aggressive shifts that also has the added benefit of dyno time and the brain trust that is SuperChips Custom Tuning!

All I can say is thanks to Jerry Barnes for producing the “ultimate upgrade”, thanks to Lidio for a great tune that worked out of the box, thanks to the guys at Dave’s Dyno for facilitating a last minute Dyno Session, and thanks to SCT and to Jerry W. himself for the personal attention and outstanding customer service he shows for his product! All of these guys are top notch in my book.

Awesome post! Did you reprogram the chip supplied in your kit or did the SCT Pro Racer Package come with it's own chip that you put the modified programs on?

I really need to have my 1-2 shift point reprogrammed, but I can't bring myself to take it out and mail it to Lidio. Is this something I could change on the current chip with the SCT Pro Racer Package?

The SCT package comes with its own chip and burner that you can reburn at will. And you bet on the shift programming, you have virtually full access to the PCM!

I may stupid for asking this but here goes. I had the feeling that 400hp was a safe range for our blocks. I know that Kenny Brown and Reinhart go up to about 450hp. I know that these Trilogy packages can offer more hp but why do it and risk getting in the red zone? I know everyone wants to be king of the hill but when is enough enough? I don't want to piss anyone off because to each their own. I will do the Trilogy shortly and feel that I don't own a Mustang. I own a big sporty luxury car. Are we asking for trouble by pushing these cars to the limit? I hope that I have not offended anyone but I just needed to know this. Thank you.

Hey guys I tried to think of the best way to respond to this diplomaticly and not look like a child trying to overly defend my initial tune and what is included in the Trilogy kit so I’ll just say: congrats to your new found power and tune. And continue to enjoy your Trilogy blower kit… It’s second to none!!!

This is a declaimer/statement that started coming in Trilogy kits about a week ago and is included with our installs as well when we’re done. It’s the attached PIC.

Also if you get a chance, try to read the link I’ve provided about tuning on my web site. We’ve seen lots of this sort of stuff before and we just want people to not be to greedy about their new found power and torque.

Thanks… and once again congrats!!

I will toss my own observations in here, I have known Lidio for about 13 years now, right from the start of his shop. He has built a reputation for good, solid, safe tunes. The statement of his, about tuning the motor as if it was his, and he is responsible for seeing to it that it lives long with a safe tune. I will be the first to admit that I get carried away and want more! But I respect Lidio's decisions and rely on him to keep me grounded! Slim is right, this isnt a race car, I still get a stiffie when I get on it on the freeway and hear that blower whine...mmmmmmm sweetness. Congratulations Bill on the added HP, now I have to find a little more safe hp for mine to keep up! And thanks to Lidio, who really does go above and beyond, and I really do appreciate it.

Thanks for the info. I'd love to hear what kind of mileage you are getting with the new tune. I'm lucky to get 18MPG on the freeway with my current setup. I'm not sure I can afford to drive this beast if it gets any worse! :)

Maybe a flip-chip is the answer? The default Lidio tune on the same chip as a more aggressive tune?? Now THAT sounds like the best of both worlds!

Exactly. 99% of people, myself included, WANT a conservative tune. I really don't WANT to tempt fate and blow stuff up. I figure if I can make 420rwhp with a conservative tune, I'm a lot better off.

I can reprogram another chip and simply mail it to you with up to four programs on it. Your car was the first I did with the trilogy kit to have a 4.10. The 1-2 shift point becomes tricky on all Ford’s with a Electronic trans once you’ve added lots of power and especially changed the rear gear. I’ve nailed this on several Trilogy’s with 4.10’s since yours left just recently.

The only way to really figure it out is from extensive road testing at WOT from first to second. This is difficult when you have the stock rear rubber, blower and 4.10’s. As you know it just wants to spin...lots!! And I couldn’t load it enough to really nail it. I have now though.

Call my shop and if I’m not there for some reason or tied up, leave me your mailing address and I will send you a new chip with some changes and up to four programs for you to try that will each make a sutle change to only the 1-2 shift.
This way you won’t have any down time with your MM and simply mail back the other one. Believe me now that I drive my own MM every day even though it isn’t Trilogy’d yet I hate not driving it!

Also Nate… your car should be getting at least 20 to 22 mpg on the highway with little to no foot action if you know what I mean. When they have the 3.55’s still in the rear 24-25mpg is no problem and usually 21mpg with the 4.10’s with the blower kit. I’m sure every thing is OK with the part throttle tune on your car. Bigger back tires, air pressure driving style etc… can kill mpg as we all know. The tune we provide does not tamper with closed loop operation or the timming curves at cruise speeds so it should not be ugly there in terms of mpg. The blower hardly adds any load when just cruising as well.

Thanks

There is no secret about the SCT tuning that's what all of you have been getting from me since the very beginning, Only it wasnt named that then. Jerry W is my friend as well as business associate, I have the SCT full tuning software at my facility and I am a dealer as well, so the gains you have seen is no surprise to me, plain and simple we have the best tuning in the USA . I Have been making a + 440 RWHP on a 3.61 pulley now since the start of my kit development, that's about a 8 PSI setup another company uses a 3.48 which is about 10 PSI and there cars come in much lower than me, Yes I could install a 3:48 and make over 450 RWHP but I feel this is to much with the rods and pistons in the car, a safe tune is better than on the edge, if you blow the car up your not going to be happy, and neither will I. But no matter who's kit you buy there is always the chance of a failure, your bolting on 200 more RWHP, what I do is try and give you as much safe power as I can. And Jerry Barnes does to.
