View Full Version : leaking at shift linkage

The Dealership did my scheduled tranny flush and the tech pointed out a seeping leak on the tranny where the linkage connects to the case.

Elected not to fix it as I would like to know more about the cost.

I will clean the area and recheck to see how much fluid is seeping out. Leak limited to linkage and bottom of pan, don't know how long this has been seeping, the tech didn't say anything last fluid change which was 20K miles ago, Feb 09.

Does the membership have any experience with this?

Thanks,

Pat

News to me. Probably an o-ring or other inexpensive seal (not counting labor to get it in)

I have some seepage there also but I know the O-ring for my trans dipstick has been bad for a while but there is no minor or major leak and the fluid level is correct. I just clean if off from time to time and keep an eye on it.

Usually transmission leaks are cause by over torquing the bolts. I admit I never paid much attention to where the linkage is located but if it's something that a tech would mess with when servicing the trans I bet he over tightened something. Just a thought. Hope all goes well.

Had the same problem at about 75,000 and again at 105,000--was warranteed both times , so I don't know cost. Ginny has a neck injury and cannot tolerate rapid acceleration, so since new, I have started--- locked in 2nd gear--- manually shifting to Drive at every stop--so the tech figured that was the cause ?????. No problems now---Good Luck, Maury

So, I have the same problem today as the OP did 4 years ago. On the off chance he's still around: did you ever get the problem resolved?

If it can be fixed without removing the crossmember I'd do it myself, otherwise it's to a shop. Also, it'd be good to know exactly what was repaired? Was it an O-ring, a gasket, or some sort of assembly that was replaced?

9 times out of 10 the off-yellow colored plug on the tailshaft is the culprit. The oring fails and seeps.
I take it out, clean it, coat in RTV and stick it back in. Ive never sourced a new o-ring

If it is the shift selector, it is about a one hour job to remove it and reseal it with a fresh seal. The cost of the part is minimal plus you will have to replace any fluid lost in the process.

Mine also leaked at the off yellow plug due to the fastener being loose.

no need to remove cross member. Remove shifter cable from the shift lever at the transmission, remove the MLPS (2 8mm bolts), drop the pan, remove the pin in the case that holds the shift shaft in the case, remove the 21mm nut that holds the shift shaft to rooster comb. slide the shaft out, use a screw driver and pry the old seal out, tap the new seal in place with a hammer. reassemble and refill with 4 qts of fluid.

^^^ Yup.
I had a leak there and had to do this. It's an actual seal, not an O-ring.

It's a useless plug that never needs to be removed.
Criticizing the use of rtv is plain ridiculous

How is the shift selector a useless pug:confused: are you even talking about the same part on the trans case?

Motown I think Zack is speaking about the plug on the tail shaft, not the shifter shaft seal.

On my first Marauder, the shifter seal leaked and was changed out by dealer.
