Ms. Jackson is home. 13 hour drive with one of those hours spent sleeping in the back seat at a truck stop. Here is a recap of my last two days getting her into my hands:
9AM Friday: Woke up to go to St. Louis, Mo to catch my flight to San Antonio to get her. I find a voicemail that the previous owner has recieved the overnighted cashiers check. Awesome.
11:30AM: Get a call from the previous owner. Cashiers check has a 5 day hold on it due to out of state check ect ect ect. I spent the next hour calling the bank, him ect trying to get it worked out. No go...so I find a bank in St. Louis, do something really stupid and pull out all the money in cash to go down to San Antonio. After I get this money, I proceed to vomit up my wonderful breakfast from the stress in the very beautiful and in full bloom garden out front of the bank. Awesome.
4:15: Left for Dallas...I am sitting in the middle of two guys about my size(big). Luckily one of them was a gear head as well as a Delta Chi...So we had a lot in common. He bought me my in flight bud light, because at this time I realize I have left my credit card on my computer desk when I booked the flight and only have 120.00 to get 700 miles back home.
6:55-7:55: Sat in Dallas airport...wanting to get another drink, but cant due to fundage, so I just smoked a bunch of cigarettes I found in my briefcase outside the terminal(I quit by the way about a year ago...nasty, but relieved the stress a little). I am relieved to know I am getting a window seat on this flight, however it is in the back of the plane and the only view I have is of the Turbojet casing. Lucky me.
8:55: I got to San Antonio. MrBluGuy was kind enough to meet me at the airport and drive me to the vehicle to meet the seller and exchange cash. On the way over there he shows off what marauders are capable of...I am immediately impressed.
10:00: Get rid of the cash, get cashiers check back and now have title in hand and a Black 300A Mercury Marauder all to myself. I open the owners booklet given to me an Ms Jacksons window sticker, salesmans cards and everything else is stashed in there. Awesome...not to mention the title says the previous owner bought the car with 60 miles. To celebrate this, MrBluGuy and I head over to Whataburger, where I realize I might just be a pedophile. The cashier was giving me the "eye" and so I gave back a little flirting. After said flirting I overhear her say "Ill be 17 in a week." Wow...
11:30: Get on the road. As soon as I pull out of San Antonio, a mustang comes flying up on me, slows, then proceeds to creep up. Either he thinks im a cop or he wants to race, so I look over and give the discerning look of an old man who does not approve. We go back and forth and I finally decide ok lets give her a run. About 100 I let off and I have a nose on him. He proceeds to fly by me at this point, and then I see the distinct charger headlights coming up in my rearview. Awesome...
So this charger gets behind me for a second. Im doing about 80-85 in a 65 at this point. He then proceeds to pull out from behind me, chase down the mustang sirens blaring. Professional courtesy? Maybe. Maybe I just have a cool car?
1ish, Saturday: I am cruising through Austin and I notice I need to gas up. as I pull off the highway and into a station, a Crown Vic is following me. So, I wait for the cherries to light up....nothing. I park, the officer gets out of his vehicle and walks up to my window. The dialogue went like this...
Me: Can I help you officer
LEO: Nice Marauder, you don't see these anymore.
Me: Oh, thank you! I just actually purchased it.
LEO: Ah nice, I have a 300B
The officer then proceeds to show me all the features like how to turn on fog lamps, OD button, getting the bass up so my rap music sounds like rap music, ect. Nice guy...
4AM: I arrive in Dallas. About this time I decide I need some sleep, so I pull off the road into a truck stop, fill her tank to the brim, buy a honey bun and some milk, turn on talk radio and the AC and curl in the back.
5AM I wake up and start the drive back
8AM I get onto highway 69. No one told me the speed limit goes from 65-35 in less than 100 feet. I obey, but Ms. Jackson's brakes are not happy.
11AM I get onto the Will Rogers Turnpike. The speed limit here is 75. No one obeys it. I am cruising around 80 and I get passed by a State Trooper. Being the luck pusher I am I up the cruise and decide to plop right behind him. We are going 90mph...nothing. He then proceeds to turn off the highway onto an on ramp and waves at me...this experience was so worth the 2.00 I paid in toll.
12PM I gas up for the last time. 13.00 is all I have in my pocket, so that goes into the tank. I feel like Im back in college going on a road trip. I do a little math in my head and feel that ill be safe getting back to Springfield on this amount of gas.
1PM I was right, I pulled up to the house at 1:28 PM, Saturday Morning.7 hours of stress, 13 hours of driving and 706 straight miles later...she is here. Honestly...I would not have had it any other way given the options to ship or have someone else drive it for me. Getting to see the Cities of Texas lit up at night, Sunrise in Oklahoma and getting to meet a fellow marauder owner and great guy in the process was totally worth it.
