So i did the famous j-mod yesterday afternoon and everything went smoothly. Took it for a test drive and the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts are MUCH better. I also like how the car engages into reverse faster.

While driving around today, I noticed the the transmision sometimes "hangs" (not a free rev) on the 2-3 shift. At partial throttle, engine RMP increases ~500 rpm and stays there a second or two before shifting to third. At wide open throttle, the engine hits the rev limiter before grabbing third. When it does this, the shift does not seem to be as firm as it is when things are working normally. The funny thing is, this is intermittent. It doesnt happen all the time. Sometimes the 2-3 shift is perfectly ok, just like it was the first time I drove it after the mod. Any ideas???

Car has about 43k on it. The 9 quarts of fluid that came out of it were a slightly darker red, with no burnt smell. Outside air temp is ~85F. Fluid level is ok, just on the bottom of the checkered part on the dipstick

Also, this may be unrelated but when I pulled back in the driveway, I noticed that the radiator fans were running. In the 2 years of owning the car, I do not remember this ever happening when the climate control is off.

You sure the intermittent weaker feel isn't tire slippage? I thought the same in mine at first, but check the mirrors after the shift and nothing but rubber.
Edit, I thought you said the 1-2 shift. Did you do the newer version jmod? http://www.crownvic.net/tech/4R70Wnotes.pdf

I followed the link you posted almost to the letter. There are a couple of differences: 1) From step III, 4-5 items did not fall into the pan, only the yellow, lollipop looking thing. The 2-3 accumulator spring and base werent accessable until I removed the valve body. Also, the oval shaped filter wasnt accessable until valve body removal, unless they are referring to the main tranny filter, which didnt fall out. 2) Step VI, the oval filter is located not in the right rear but in the front center.

One thing i did different was I didnt use dielectric grease when re-installing the plastic connector.

Transmission flaring?

IT may be in the tune...check to see if your shift points are to close to when your T/C locks or unlocks...

That's exactly what it feels like. The T/C unlocks but the car waits longer to shift. Is that what transmission flaring is? The only thing is, I dont have a tune. Bone stock.

It happened again while I was driving back home. When I got to a stop light, I could just pick up the scent of tranny fluid but looking under the car with a creaper and flashlight turns up clean and dry.

Negative. Although I wish the darn thing would shift better on its own. Seems like it wants to upshift as fast as possible and not downshift when I come out of a corner.

You might want to try a Zack t/s, big improvement.

Well, that's the biggest reason everyone gets a tune. That and a little more power.

That's good...

PM Darin from BCAuto, he's a vendor here...He can tell you how a J-Mod might affect a trans with a stock shift schedule, and T/C...

Aloha

Hows your engine temp? If my engine runs a little hot due to air in the system it will make the trans act strange. I had that happen a few times.

Same here kinda, if my A/C is on and I am only at part throttle then the 1-2 shift is delayed quite a bit and shifts really hard. Doesn't bother me though.

Engine temp doesnt look any different than what the guage has always read. Good news is that I drove around all day today and it didnt happen once. Soooo problem solved I guess... Maybe some gunk caught up in an orifice or something that needed time to clean itself out?
