View Full Version : French girlfriend/Marauder story
When I told the girlfriend, who is french, I was buying a Mercury Marauder she said "what's that". Lets go over to the dealer and I'll show you say I. As we approached the MM from the rear she excalimed "Ah, Mah-roo-Duhr". As if to say "if you pronounced it correctly in the first place, doofus, I would have known what it was."
She doesn't appreciate it though. But she can't understand how I could trade a Porsche 930 for a GE M-134.

My mother can't pronounce Marauder for her life. It always comes out Mah-roo-Duhr or Mah-rott-ahh. It really annoys me that no one can pronounce our cars name correctly without us telling them.

Marauder is an old old discription of theives and in general all bad acting type men usually on horseback, back in the day. Not that uncommon of a word.

Although I have no accent, it comes out Mahraadah when I say it. It comes out fast when I drive it.
During World War II, there was a special unit (US Army 75th Infantry Regiment) which operated clandestinely in Burma. They were commanded by LTC Frank Merrill and were known as "Merrill's Marauders." This was the forerunner of today's 75th Infantry which we now refer to as Army Ranger units.

Sorry Ross no flame intended, but Merrill's Marauders were the 5307 Composite Unit (Provisional) that operated in the Burma-India-China Theater between Feburary and May of 1944. If you are interested check out this website to Merrill's Marauders

The 75th Ranger regiment did exist during WWII, but they were mostly in Europe. Pre D-day landing on the Normandy coast at Point-du-Luc is one of their more famous ingagements during the war. The 75 rangers trace their roots all the back to Roger's Rangers during the French and Indian Wars around 1740s - 1770s. Our Candian friends have a different name for this conflict which escapes me at the moment. Hope this helps.
Very interesting and informative, Haggis. Have to do more checking into that. All I know is, as a former Infantry officer, Ranger units trace their lineage differently, and refer to Merrill's Marauders. I agree that all Ranger units trace their lineage back to the pre-Revolutionary Rogers Rangers.

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but...
I am a former enlisted 11B and spent sometime at Hunter Army Airfield. Yes the Rangers do refer to Merill's Marauders in their indoctrination for their missions were similar and they still use the same training. Brig. General Merrill organized the 5307 himself as a comando unit to harass the Japanse behind their lines, based on the Australian unit called the "Chindits" (please excuse spelling). All this info can be found readily on The History Channel". The Rangers also refer to "The Swamp Fox" located in the Carolinas during the Revolutionary War. Would always be happy to talk about Military History, but maybe should start another Thread so as not to keep Hijacking this one. RANGERS LEAD THE WAY!!

Nope. I've always heard of it reffered to as the "French - Indian war".
Agreed, Haggis. You have done your homework on this, there is just a breakdown in commo somewhere. I appreciate the link you gave so I can do some more homework.

French and Indian War (1754-1763), the last of four North American wars waged from 1689 to 1763 between the British and the French. It was called "The Seven Year War" by the French, here is another link for those who are interested.

If I'm not mistaken, the French and Indian war (in which American colonists like George Washington fought for the British), was an American extension of the Seven Years' War which was going on simultaneously in Europe between England and France. Gave some of our boys good experience which they would later use in our own war for independence.

That link's links come up as invalid.
Like I said, "French - Indian wars". It was the Indians that we got so much support from in 1812. Montcalm lost, Wolfe got to name the war. Hehehe. Canadians aren't the French. :)

Guys there were many correct answers to the ranger posts. I was a ranger team leader in the 3rd Battalion 75th Ranger Regiment, (Special Operations). Our shoulder patch and beret flash was almost a clone of the Chine-Burma-India theater patch. In our unit history we traced our linage from Merrills Marauders, through The Swamp Fox, directly to Rogers Rangers. No need to argue over some details, as they said in WW II, "Rangers Up Front".

My sister-in-law and her boyfriend stayed with us for close to 2 weeks in May (one of the reasons I got this car) and were kind of surprised to see I got a family car given the origin of the name (yes, it's the same in Swedish). Not the image they were expecting...
Speaking of image, how's this?

Yeah, you gotta love those nice even 12.500000 second 1/4 mile times. Damn those jap cars are precise. :)
What's even more impressive is how those cars can run exactly mid 12s with no mph. Apparently the 1/8 mile was too quick to be measured. 60' times were irrelevant... this car is MID 12s!!!
Someone needs to come out with a horsepower/ET calculator that handles more than 1 decimal point, by the way...

That's what my dad told me when I was at a show by a group called "Chicago City Limits." They were doing improve of Jepordy and one catergory was "Words that start with M" and the audience was to choose what the question would be. My friend goes "Magnetohydrodynamics!" and they never chose him. I said "MARAUDER!" and the guy says "What is an otter in a blender? MURROTTER!"
Not quite what I was thinking.
