View Full Version : Anyone have a vibration dampener fail?

Im pretty sure its my vibration dampener that's causing my engine vibration at idle. I noticed that some of the rubber material is chewed up in the front of the pulley, but I can't move the outer piece of the damper by hand and the pulley doesn't wobble either.
My question is, has anyone ever had a dampener fail on them and what did it feel like?

If you want to save Dave the trouble I got one you can come pickup if you want I bought a new one when I messed up the orginal because I used the wrong type of puller. The new replacments are a little different then the orignal different size threaded holes and not quite as heavy.

Thanks Tom. I think Ill go with a original heavy one to see if it cuts the vibration down. Its irritating me to no end that I don't even wanna drive the car. The idler pulley cut the vibration down a bit but not completely.

My 79 Z28 slipped the rubber and ground into the timing cover but never actually vibrated, just pissed oil all over. I hope this is it Paul, I know it's driving you nuts.

Paul,
If you are having damper issues, you might want to have the engine opened up and check the crankshaft for proper balance or the mains were torgued properly.

I asked that same question several times to my engine builder. They assured me that I got a properly balanced crank shaft and that the main bolts are all ARP and were torqued to spec. It doesn't vibrate at higher RPMs just at idle.

I had this happen on my old 89 5.0 GT Convertible. Keep us posted.

The dampner moved enough to cause a vibration. I've also seen these come apart on 2 valve CVs and GMs.

Makes me feel better knowing that its most likely the culprit. Til then Im not driving the car til its replaced.
I do have a few chunks of rubber missing from the front of it so I'm really hoping that's the issue. If not I may get rid of the car cause of vibrations. :mad2:

The modular motors are neutral balanced, so there is no offset weight on the flexplate or dampener. A slipped weight ring SHOULDN'T cause vibration, but anything is possible.
Was the entire rotating assembly balanced? i.e. all rods matched, all pistons matched, then the crankshaft balanced with appropriate bob weights?

Today I took the car back to the shop. They called the engine builder and he said the entire rotating assembly was balanced 3 times to insure I would have zero problems when they installed the engine the second time. Today we went through the car after you told me that the engine was neutral balanced. We checked the bolts on the convertor, they were tight and we double checked anything that may be touching with the exhaust. We started the car and while looking around we saw the flexplate had a wobble in it. We shut it down and turned it by hand. The outer gear ring of the flexplate was moved in on one section of the plate and flush with the plate on the other. That was the wobble and thats the vibration Im feeling.
This week they are replacing it with a new one at no cost to me due to the fact that they must have bumped it while re-installing the engine and the car should be 100% again.
Ill know for sure Thursday.

The original damper on my 2000 Grand Marquis failed. The rubber puked out of it. Luckily the outer ring didn't come off when still on the car. I noticed it when I installed a built engine when the car was 4 years old. It wasn't having vibration issues. Lucky time on my part. And it was driving a supercharger for a year or so. Installed an ATI superdamper and never looked back.
Hope the flex plate solves your issues.

Thanks,
The rubber on the dampener is a little chewed in the front but its doesn't wobble and the outer ring has no play in it. If you saw the wobble in the flexplate you would see that its definitely the problem. We didn't wanna try to tap the ring back in place because of the chance that we could knock the ring off the flexplate then I can't start the car. Its a faint vibration that I feel in the seat but its enough to irritate me so I need to get this taken care of. Im changing out the balancer anyway just as a precaution.

Paul, let me know if you still need the dampener after you swap the flex plate.

Thanks Dave, Will do. I think by that time, Steeda should have their pulleys back in stock and Ill get a new one from Sparta.
