And I can almost guarantee you you'd never guess it...
get ready...
The "HD" s-spring I bought with the rebuild kit or cobra clutch kit (forget what it actually comes with) snapped in two right in the center. By some grace of God, the two parts stayed seated in their proper place, so everything still worked fine until I had to turn, and (from what I remember the mechanic saying) basically without the proper tension there, things were rubbing and bouncing instead of smoothly sliding, hence the rubbing-course-glass type sound. The guy said after looking at the HD spring and comparing it to my factory one, while the HD one may have been made of more resilient material, it was a much thinner piece of metal. Put back in the original S-Spring, and now things are quiet as factory. :)
Side note, take this as you will: had them check my magnet in the diff, and after a few months and what had to have been at least 6 or 7 thousand miles of pretty constant abuse from within days of having the new gears installed, there was absolutely ZERO shavings or filings. Even broken, that diff didn't shave away at anything, cause aside from the s-spring it was flawlessly clean. I think I'm now a believer of the "doesn't need a break in if they are installed correctly and are not cheap parts" theory.
I'll post pics of the spring if anyone would like.
