So I found this while browsing through the savage jungle that is the internet.
http://www.treehugger.com/files/2009/09/electric-supercharger-hybrid-boosts-torque-better-mpg.php
I was just wondering what you guys thought about this. I'm not big on doing too much with boosting, I'm afraid I will blow something or somehow damage the engine. I was hoping this would be a small but effective alternative.

If it worked all the major car makers would be installing them.
Do you see them on any cars?

^^^^^ what FBM said ^^^^^^
Might as well use a hair dryer for the extra "boost" you'll get from one of these. ;)

Think about the amount of power a true supercharger uses as compared to the fractional horsepower miniture electric motor used to drive the electrical device (I am reluctant to use the term supercharger for this thing).

Yep!
That electric S/C in the link works much better than those typical Ebay 'leaf blower' superchargers....
But you can see that it only has enough power to make useable boost in the low rpm ranges.
It could be useful as they tested it, to provide immediate boost at low rpm.
To make boost at mid-to-high rpm requires a LOT more power.
Look at how many electric motors and batteries are needed for this (still marginal) electric S/C set-up:

It's only meant for same displacement 4 cyl cars. A V6 or V8 has a lot higher demand for air than what that unit could move.

Think about the amount of power a true supercharger uses as compared to the fractional horsepower miniture electric motor used to drive the electrical device From their specs:
Current draw - Acceleration: 350 amps
weelman: That thing is prolly too small for our motor. While it may provide a small boost at low RPM, I think it would become a restriction at higher RPM and actually reduce power. Be perfect for a Civic, though.
"VTEC blower just kicked in, yo!" :D

Reminds me of the leafblower dyno tests.

UFB!
Those idiots are shooting NO2 into the engine with no additional fuel enrichment.
I'm amazed that both engines didn't lean way out and smoke a piston or exhaust valve.
I'd might try that "What If ?" crap with an old lawnmower...but not on my daily driver.....

I was thinking the same thing....friggin' lame wuss music for a "performance" car dyno video.
Maybe they blew their testicles off with that leafblower, or they were shooting estrogen gas instead of nitrous.....:dunno:

I think that was pre-dyno. That happened back in 05 when he bought the civic.

From the looks of it, they're spraying it before the maf, and from the gains, 40 hp isn't huge. It's much like spraying a dry shot I guess. Still pretty funny though :)
I want one of those electric superchargers for my computer... sounds like it could move a bit more air than the standard 12v computer fans :D

Interesting concept. But I'm currious. I would imagine that thing is some how tied into the computer to control it while excellerating or slowing down. Or does it just go full blast 70,000 rpms no matter driving or parked. Meh. What ever.

It's snake oil, I think Rainbow make one to LOL, oops that is a vacum cleaner, but maybe if you plug it in backwords it will blow instead of suck LOL.:beer: PS Rain bow is a water to air unit DBL LOL

So what you're saying is that these are "specifically designed" for DTR's.

Is this in regards as to whether the blower is AC or DC?

Oh I'm fairly sure the blower is wired for both. Plus it has adapters. :D
