Well, I got back from San Antonio late Sunday night. Woke up at six and started on the engine. I first had to swap all the cams. Guy I bought them from mislabeled them and shame on me, I didn't check. The engine shop did exactly what I asked. Before I left for Texas, I did the slow crank rotation test and watched the pistons through the plug holes. Thump, oops... Found that there is a number code on the cams. Easy way to read them is by the last digit before the two end letters. Eg. F6ZE-6A270-BC is a right head (passenger) 98 Cobra cam. The zero designates that position always. *1-AB is left (driver) intake, *2-AF is right exhaust and *3-AF is left exhaust. Well, swapped those yesterday morning, got the rest of the engine done (seals, timing cover, valve covers, yada yada). Got the engine in the car just after dark. Today 6:00 am, aligned the flex plate and TC, bolted everything together, ran all the wiring, hoses, pulled lots of hair out, is that blood? How come my arms are numb... Oh yeah, filled her with Castrol 5W30, 50/50 antifreeze left the funnel in the crossover with more 50/50, put the FP fuse in, got the keys... (oh yeah... ONLY FRRP headers at this point!) VROOOOOMMM... what a freakin sound!!!! No leaks, topped off the coolant and took her for a ride... Short ride!!! I set off car alarms going around the block!!! :D To the muffler shop tomorrow. Woohoo!!!!

You did all that in a day!?! All that would have taken me a week!

Nice job Bill. I'd like to hear more about how you degree the cams and set the timing.
Don't you have to seat the rings on first fire?? How are you going to break it in?
Congrats!! Can't wait to see a dyno or 1/4 mile time (without spray)..

Actually, the timing is really easy. Connect the dots on all sprockets, chains, etc. There really wasn't much play in the cam keyways to mess with anyway. I've heard very different ways to break and engine in and how long it takes to seat rings. Break-in will be "Drive it like you stole it." for the first 25 miles. ;) Damn muffler shop was all booked up today. She's going in tomorrow morning bright and early. Drove by two officers doing road detail downtown this morning. They looked like I was crazy. I was going slow and close enough that I told them I was going straight to the muffler shop. Got the "Ohhhh, ok!" nod from them.

Cool. Then you gave her 1/2 throttle after you got 50 feet away. :D
You got video on this yeah? Youtube open headers? :)

Any updates?

Muffler shop was booked yesterday. It's at the shop now and will be getting Magnaflows and mandrel bent pipe linking it up to the X-pipe,etc. Can't wait... I'm schizing now that I'm this far along and can't drive it! :depress:

You wouldn't be too impressed with the pics. I actually decided to use my original valve covers and coil covers. The local powder coater pricing was outrageous! They're in great condition and have a new plan! I have the original Al block in awesome condition, can still see the crosshatch in all cylinders after 128k! I have a set of cops, all timing components, sensors, valve covers, coil covers, heads... Over the next year, I'll build up a stroker with those parts. This was fun and I want to do it again! :D Will a 351 or 400c fit? :P

Did you look at the odometer before you tossed them the keys? I'd like to see pics of how your exhaust comes out.

Just picked her up. Can't figure out where this small exhaust leak is coming from though... :D She sounds great! Very nice low rumble at idle and a throaty growl when you step on it. I definitely need to hook up the wideband and see where the A/F is. SOTP is much better, but, I know she's not spot on without a new tune.

Soooo... anyone know if new engines gain power as they "break-in"? I know the computer does some relearning, but, wow!!! Up in the high rpms, there's no drop off at all, she just keeps climbing strong. After hitting 2k, it almost feels like I have the N2O like on the old engine. Oops! Just noticed the Storyboard demise so I cleaned this up. My bad!

It should gain a small bit of power after they are broken in as there is less resistance to all of the moving parts over time.
When are you going to the dyno?

Dyno hopefully this week. I need to install the EGR adapter. I'm finishing all the wiring to my triple gauge pod gauges this morning. Just got the A/F gauge working properly. Had to dig up a computer with a serial port to connect to the LC-1 and change the analog output voltages to the range of the gauge. I'll see what the A/F is at when I'm done.
