View Full Version : Bad Day in Rauder Land

Hey Guys,
Our rauder died today....
By way of background is a vortex charged car.
Been running just fine. Although we rarely drive it. Our son is home from California so he's had it out.
All of a sudden the car stopped running. Went to restart and it would only stay running by playing with the throttle; i.e. won't not stay running on its own.
Occassionally upon starting it would rev unaided to 6k rpm.
Throwing p0190.
Talked to our friend Lidio...he said check for vacuum leaks. The vacuum guage shows little to no vacuum.
Any ideas on what to check as I cannot get the rauder into Lidios for 2 weeks?
Also has anyone had their ignition switch fail; i.e. no stops just rotates..can find ignition and start but the key does not spring back after ignition...have to manuall turn back to run position.
Thanks!
Jeff

what is the fuel psi

Good question. Fuel pressure is around 40. Also just checked the vacuum gauge as I recall Lidio thinking it might be the intake manifold gasket. Little to no vacuum.

Vortec? Son been driving it? Check to see if any of the air pipes are blown loose from the rubber couplings.

+1
It may be as easy as that.

Hi.
Just checked all connections, hoses, etc. And they are all intact.
Other areas to check?

Bypass valve? vacuum lines...

Had the rise in RPM's on a 76 cougar. Change everything even starter. Finally changed battery, whammo fired right up. Would not start jumping it. Might try that? RPM's with up righ but engine remained at idle.

Something has come loose in the air lines. Check them again for a split seam and that everything is on tight. First time I popped the tubes loose, I thought I ruined it for good!

There is a possibility that the actuator piece in the steering column is gummed up. It is preventing the spring back motion for the ignition switch.

+1 for vacuum issue, especially if you're seeing 0 change on your boost gauge.
I had this problem after I pulled my Vortec off to change the belt and steering pump. The vacuum line coming out of the engine had come loose on the passenger side of the engine (on the side where the Vortec is mounted).
I think that with age the rubber hoses shrink a bit - you might want to unplug/replug all of the vacuum connections to ensure they're tight.

One place the tubes sometimes come loose that is hard to spot is at the intercooler inlet/outlet (assuming air-air setup), another spot is the discharge tube from the blower head unit.

Its a better day!
Found the problem. The line to the IAC feel off. Amazing.
I didn't see it at first as the line dropped down into the valley where the injectors are. It was only when I looked at the motor from the passenger side did I see that there was no line going into the IAC!!!
So I zip tied it..nice and snug now.
Thanks for all the support.
And got it running just in time to go to a show today - gotta trophy!

Glad it was something simple! Congrats on the trophy.

The P0190 is related to your fuel pressure spiking and causing the rail pressure sensor it show as failed. Usually this code is set at startup. Its common when changing to a high performance fuel pump and with boost-a-pump.
The computer learns the fuel pressure and will likely go away after a few drive cycles.
