I did the world famous j mod a little over a month ago and I would like to soften up the 1-2 shift as its just a wee bit too harsh for my liking. My first idea is to cut the 1-2 accumulator spring to 1/3 to 1/4 its original length and re-install it. Second idea is to replace the separator plate and not drill out the 1-2 shift holes. Has anyone here tried this before? Whats the best plan of attack?

Do you have a tune?
Do not undo the modification to the separator plate you want to fill that clutch as fast as possible. You can adjust the shift firmness somewhat with a hand held tuner or if you still want a softer shift use a Mustang accumulator spring it's firmer than the MM spring

No tune... yet. 4.10's or blower will change that.

Idea# 2: off the table.
Looks like its time to brush up my fluid mechanics/accumulator theory.
I'm starting to think this is going to be a messy trial and error project until I get what I like.
No tune sounds like the mustang accumulator spring would fit the bill. You will get a firmer than stock shift no 1-2 chirp at WOT. Add a tune to that and you'll have a subdued 1-2 chirp at WOT. I on the other hand love hitting second and fighting for control(no spring, tune, & 430 HP) but to each there own:D

My Zack tune does not lighten up the 1-2 shift much at all. I want to put the springs back in mine and firm them up with the tuner.
