Yep! It burns longer than my Shelby GT-350 did (back in 1967). Sure hope we can find tires that will hook up better.

It was thirty degrees outside, the tires were cold, and we were totally dropping the hammer. The thing actually hooks up nice when you feather it a little.
These vids were for the sole purpose of answering the question, can you light em up?!!!
smith5365
11-19-2002, 12:38 PM
O>.K. Same with the GT-350. So where in your area can you run a road course to see how the handling appears? Don't they have a road course layout at Indy these days, and does K.B. have any track time available to them?
mensrea

I think at this time of year I don't have any areas around me that are still open, probably same in Indy.
Should probably call Kenny and ask them (good idea ).
This thing handles better than stock

Well I have to admit it sure wasn't a fair trade. I definately got the best of the deal.
Is that car shifting into second gear in the middle of that burnout? Goodness, that's a great sight. Out of a 281 cid V8 no less.

My car gets lunatic sideways when I hit second gear!!
I know the feeling! I think it was maybe day 5 with the MM, sitting waiting to get out of my schools parkinglot. Stupid hmm hmm (woman) backed into me!!! Luckily she wasn't going fast enoph to do anything. She hit me dead center, so I guess all she hit was the liscense plate bracket (damn thing's good for something!). After calling her nine kinds of choice words to make her cry, I preceded to leave the parking lot. Came around the turn to the main road (I held up traffic waiting to get out so I knew it was clear on that main road), slammed it. I swear the car was near totally sideways in the lane. Corrected and stopped at the light. Looked over at the lot to see about 20+ faces going  Oh did I feel so good, especially after going over my car with a fine tooth comb to look for scratches! :D
mensrea: Damn you... ;) Get some slicks on that thing and pop a wheelie man!:D

The sad thing about the burn-out is it only cost an extra $15K to get the car to do that on a regular basis, unlike the propoganda MM website that shows the car doing burn-outs at will.

Although it is disappointing that Mercury advertised this thing doing a burn out... I think that for around 50K you can get a vette killer that seats five, handles like a dream and gets 21 mpg on the highway.
This car is worth every penny.
Even the stock Marauder is a good deal... for the price of a low level japanese lux car you get a big, fast and cool four door...

I think Mercury did us a SMALL disservice with the burnout ads, but not that great of one. We have wide 18" tires on a 4300 lb car. Burnout? yeah, right. :)
I'm glad they don't smoke from a stand still. Increases the stealth factor. Burn outs are just a warning to the other guy. Just think, we hookup better then most cars at the track, all the power is slammed to the pavement and nothing is lost.

Mensrea,
Sorry I missed seeing the tire-smoking session this past Saturday at Kenny Brown. I definitely would have stayed. Have you taken the car to the track yet? I'd be interested to know what your times are.
Question: Have you considered joining an SVTOA chapter? If you are not aware, SVTOA (Special Vehicle Team Owners Association) is a car club sponsored in part by Ford. Though primarily for SVT owners, any Ford product owner can join. SVTOA is for car enthusiast, and as a member, you'd be entitled to go to special events.
Past national events have included:
- Track time (track and drag)
- the SVT Experience (held in Dearborn, included plant tours, events at the Dearborn proving grounds, a tour of the Ford crash test facility, cruise, banquet and more I cannot readily remember)
- invitations to special Ford events and unveilngs such as the unveiling of the GT40, and unveiling of the '03 Cobra (these were separate events).
Each chapter has local events as well. The Indy chapter (< 1 year old) has had several, which have included:
- 2 dyno days at Kenny Brown Perf.
- an Install event at Kenny Brown Perf.
- A Meet/Greet with Lyn St. James
- a car show at the Mt. Comfort Air show (in Indy)
- Test driving a Kenny Brown Marauder conversion at IRP...it belonged to some guy in Chicago. I think it was the first Kenny Brown Marauder made. (In case there's any uncertainty, I'm joking on this one.)
Cork (Cork is his first name, and his email is: corkf@concentric.net) is the director of the Northern Illinois SVTOA chapter. Feel free to contact him if interested. (You're welcome to join the Indy chapter as well.)
BTW - you missed our Dyno session. Here's a line to the runs if interested: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/ssmith512/
Good Luck.

Perhaps the most amazing thing about this car is that the drivability is fantastic. You can drive it all day long without ever knowing it's a beast... it idles great, drives great, is smooth as heck and god can it stop.
If you find yourself wondering what the $$$ to Kenny gets you, it gets you a daily driver monster.
I let my mother drive it yesterday and all she could say was "this car is very smooth"... I don't think she even knew what it was capable of.
My 69 big block vette is a bear to drive; it takes muscle, sweat and tenacity. I think it will stay in the garage!

Yup, Kenny Brown did mod both of my Cobras. Being convertibles, I wanted to stiffen them up. Both have Kenny Brown super sub-frame connectors, cross-matrix bracing, jacking rails, strut tower brace and lower chassis brace (you can't be too stiff). Additionally, my '03 has his Caster plus plates and rear shock tower brace.
On my '03, I'm considering having Kenny Brown mod my suspension with coil-overs (front and rear), a 'rear steer' kit for the IRS, and maybe brakes. After tracking the car, I'm hooked; I'd like to do more track events. With this in mind, I'm playing with the idea of installing a roll-bar (it's almost impossible to take a convertible to the track without one). Kenny Brown should be coming out with one soon for the '03 convertible. With my other mods, the '03 currently puts 415.7 hp and 382.8 lb-ft of tq to the rear wheels. My '99 (which seems enemic compared to the '03) puts out about 296 hp and 302 lb-ft of tq (again, at the wheels).
Well, that's probably enough 'Cobra' talk on the Marauder web site.
Enjoy the ride...

Goldy, sorry no offense intended. That's one of the down sides to d'net, you can't "read" verbal inflection. I was totally complimenting your joke about the KB 1/4 mile test in Mensrea's car. Guess I should have said "Wow what a warm invitation into the SVTOA". Sorry.

No problem.
BTW - MNYPIT is an avid enthusiast, goes to many track events, as well as instructs; he is definitely a good resource. He owns a heavily mod'd 2001 Cobra which puts 476 hp to the wheels (I forget his tq, but it's up there).
Enjoy.

MNYPIT was at Kenny's last Saturday sweet ride... do you remember how much boost he is running?
Custom2kGt
11-21-2002, 10:25 AM
I believe he's running 10 to 12 lbs of boost through his s/c. He's assisted me and a couple of my buddies in a several AutoX events. A true gear head and one heck of an engineer. Luckily I live close enough to Steve to borrow his stuff everynow and then, :), pressure brake bleeder, etc. lol. It's not what you know but who you know. Hopefully by next year I'll have enough AutoX time and a few more suspension mods to get some track time at the SVTOA track event at IRP. I figure I better learn how to turn running 30 and 40 mph before I get into the 90's+.

Can you not do a brake stand on a bone stock Marauder?
Perhaps if you were to replace the rear "slightly wider and slightly taller" tires and put the same size tires as the ones in the front, a burn out may be more possible by slamming the pedal or at least a brake stand.
GEO
I just saw a stream of the Popular Mechanics road test of the stock Marauder doing a brake stand. I can see that it can burn out now, but the PopMech car had to heat up the brakes quite the bit.
Tell me this, with 4.10's and an X-pipe, should one be able to plant the pedal down and smell some compound? If not I'm sure a chip and a high stall aswell would be enough (and these are relatively cheap mods).
GEO
That TireRack has a deal on the stock tires for the rear of the Marauder?
Indeed they do. Only $86 bucks each. Check it out. (http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Compare1.jsp?startIndex=0&width=245%2F&ratio=55&diameter=18&search=true&pagelen=20&pagenum=1&pagemark=1&do=Search)

Just a thought, I had a C6 blow on me in 78, ripped up the floor pretty good, now have the sheild on all the time, not the blanket, keeps in the heat to much for street driving, use the one like CSI builds.

4.10'S the right chip and intake system and you should liquify the tires with ease from a dead stab of the throttle.
Well, my MM has 4.10's and a chip (no intake yet) and it's difficult to get much spin, let alone a real boiler going from a dead stop w/out using the brakes.
Again, for one reason or another, this car does 'hook up' pretty well... Oooh, I know; maybe these 'rake' inducing possibly-too-tall-for-my-liking 55 aspect ratio rear tires are secretly wrinkle-wall drag radials!
Nah.
It is possible to get some spin from a dead stop with a good 'stab' at the throttle, and once I've gotten a good burnout with that technique... But generally a 'burnout' requires judicious use of the brake pedal to modulate forward speed..*
-Jim
*all of the above information is pure speculation on my part. And that video I posted before? That's not my car, that's just a flash animation of a cartoon I drew. Yeah. I would never subject my Mercury cough. under warranty. cough. to such abuse.

Hey Mensrea, I'm assuming you have an aluminum drive shaft??
Also, what kind of tires are you running? I know KB said something about the stockers not being able to keep up w/ the hp. I think the quote was "the stock tires would be treads before he left the parking lot".
mensrea
12-02-2002, 07:13 AM
I have Pirelli P Zeros on it, they are great, but MUCH more $$$ than stock...
I have a different drive shaft in my car, not sure what the specs are, check out the post driveshaft reliability on this site to see an answer from someone from Ford on this whole issue.
I have asked for an analysis of the difference between the stock Marauder shaft and the police interceptor shaft, it will be interesting to see what the actual difference is.
I installed the Metal Matrix driveshaft from Dennis, and could NOT be happier. I highly recommend it!
mensrea
12-02-2002, 10:31 AM
I think Dennis sells a Dynotech driveshaft. Dyno tech started out as a division of General Motors, and then ended up being purchased by Illinois Tool Works.
The only thing I don't like about this driveshaft is the price... anyone know if a police interceptor shaft will work, or what the critical speed is for that shaft?

mensrea
12-03-2002, 08:32 AM
Ford sells a police interceptor Metal Matrix shaft that bolts right in the marauder... no one seems to have used one yet so we will have to wait and see. That one is only 200 bucks.

""The Nitto NT-555R Extreme Drag Radial Tire is an exciting addition to the specialty performance radial tire segment of the Nitto Tire Product Line. With the NT-555R Nitto engineers succeeded in designing a DOT approved, drag racing radial tire. Nitto Tire demanded a tire that would outperform all drag racing radial tires, provide impressive control and handling, and still deliver up to 15,000 miles of tread life of normal street-driving use. NT-555R's are manufactured with the original tread depth of 6/32nd's of an inch and are constructed with a specially formulated soft racing tread compound to provide maximum traction. However, this soft and flexible tread will wear much quicker than tread compounds formulated for regular passenger cars. The Nitto NT-555R is designed primarily for competition drag racing. ""

I like that phrase "up to 15,000 miles of tread life of normal street-driving use". That means, of course, ****y-footing around on the street which I would never be able to do with those tires on the rear. I'd light 'em up every chance I had so I'd be lucky to get 5,000 miles. Years back, we had a recapper in Pasadena that put soft compound on good casings for all us nuts that loved autocross/gymkana racing on weekends. We had two sets of tires and changed them out the night before we went racing. Only way to go. So what's a set of Nitto's and wheels going to go for as a "weekend" set. I know, I know. I'd probably "forget" to rotate them off after the weekend.
