CONVOY TIPS
1. Cars with FRS radios should be dispersed at the lead, middle and tail end of the convoy if at all possible.
2. Lights On (sidelamps & fogs /or/ headlights & fogs)
3. If time permits, make a recon run of the route to check out turns, exits, potential problem areas, and the parking situation upon arrival.
4. Speeds should be maintained at 5-10 miles UNDER the posted speed limit – otherwise the cars at the end will be doing triple digits trying to catch up.
5. Recognize that “outsiders” will occasionally (or frequently) drop into the line and separate cars in the convoy and open up gaps between convoy cars. Speeds should anticipate this.
6. If an outside driver cuts into the convoy and slows half the group down, don't just sit behind the offending vehicle, accelerate to passing speed to go around and catch up.
7. Give advanced notice (over the radio) and with turn signals of any planned move. Last minute lane changes and exits are potential problems for folks at the end of the convoy.
8. When changing lanes, give notice on the radio when “Moving Right” or “Moving Left”. Use of turn signals also helps those without radios.
9. Notify everyone of a slow down with a “Brake Check” announcement.
10. When making an exit or a turn, the lead car should get in the exit lane well in advance (about 1-2 miles) of the exit so that cars on the tail end have enough time to merge.
11. If you get caught at a traffic signal, maintain visibility with the car ahead of you.
12. Conversely, if you were the last car through the light and see the car behind you get stopped, slow down and notify everyone in your section to slow so that the others can catch up.
13. Follow the cars in front of you. The “GPS Bozo or Bozette” doesn’t necessarily know the best way to where you are heading.
14. If you are aware that the cars ahead of you are changing lanes – make the change as soon as you can so you can serve as a blocker to allow other cars to run up and get in front of you.
15. Use your FRS radios to keep the other drivers “in the loop” of what you plan to do. Other drivers echo those annoucements on back through the convoy.
16. FRS Radios should not be used for any conversations other than the logistics of the trip. PERIOD! Idle chatter makes it hard to follow directions.
17. Speak clearly and don't have the mic so close to your mouth that we can't understand a word you're saying. Short and to the point.
18. Please don't keep your "mike" open. It just broadcasts static and disrupts other communications.
If you have any other CONVOY TIPS …. Please list them here.

Good idea. Lets all try to improve our convoy skills by meeting up at the nearest bar and have a convoy to the next!......

Number 1 should read:
-Never Let Mike Heckman Lead a Convoy.
If I recall correctly last year during the Louisville Meet...
I-265W and I-65S to Bardstown, we cruised under the limit and everyone in our convoy was communicated to, very few cut ins from people not in our group and we maintained speed without hitting gas and brakes numerous times.
All of this while maintaining one lane of traffice and approx. 37 MM's.
You leading the pack is quite different...
Constant WOT's, no radio communication, excessive lane changes, nailing the brakes, etc..
Mainly due to your lack of maturity, self-centered, egotisitical, holier-than-though, I love me, self-pretentious attitude.
Continue doing us a favor and take the back door and maintain radio silence, so we do not hear you complaining about going too slow, staying in one lane and not going WOT and hitting the brakes.
Good post Charlie!
Mike.

Not sure how this may benefit this topic but trying to find that Bar-B-Q place proved GPS is not 100% accurate. Maybe print some google maps and hand them to say every 3rd or 5th car in the line up as we leave the hotel??

See Tip #12. I tell GPS Jill to "take a hike" many times.
18. After you say your piece on the radio, release the mike button. I drove most of the way to Lexington listening to static on an open mike. This may also be related to a voice activated mike that stays "ON" if you are listening to the radio or the mike is picking up other noises.

All those tips are great no doubt, but when its all said and done, you still need some others to help out physically being at stage points ahead for reference to insure those lost , dragging late or whatever get to the right turn-----but when those folks whom you were gonna depend on are not available due to unforeseen circumstances --you end up , well , like a long string look for a place to drop........

I would suggest a driver meeting before the days events....to discuss all the routes with GPS in hand to punch in address. Bring GPS and note pad to said meeting.

I've got to take the hit for the BBQ FUBAR.
My info indicated the restaurant was right off the highway (which it was), just didn't say that you couldn't exit off the northbound side and get there directly...:o

Bottom line is that we all made it so no matter what, it worked itself out!
If a convoy is more than six to eight cars, and traveling in a city, then split it up, or have a police escort.
I hold that traveling the speed limit is better than going slower. In Louisiana we can push seven cars through a yellow light.
Another thought for Marauderville and Louisville is window flags, preferably in LSU purple and yellow. That really identifies the convoy and people won't break in.
The flags won't detract from the aesthetic beauty of the Marauder since it's a practical application of a device.
The flags are only $5.00 and can be purchased at home before one leaves to the event.

Yeah--we all have realized when in a convoy you gotta be a bit different when doing that--most will not bother us when we are close............
This is an excellent idea! MV9 planners ....are you taking notes?;)

Great idea --getting all together ahead of time to discuss route plans--however----not sure who will show up !! since most want to do other things--that's why we offered printed directions even to those with GPS's.........
The Best is flags with some volunteers ahead at strategic points to keep all involved together....
But Rex did the best he could--given he was doing most of it from La...Like whats been said --we got there and had fun---and someone else said somewhere --its the fun of getting lost and finding others too with Marauders--seeing different sites in its progress...........

To be honest, long motorcades without police are not a very good idea. Better to have someone advance the route, break up into groups of no more than 4-5 cars and have maps or whatever to distribute to the lead cars of each group. It wont look as cool but with long unescorted motorcades there will always be people trying to cut in (and frankly, without a marked police escort for a motorcade they have every right to do so.) Small groups reduce/stop the "caterpillar effect" as well. Ive seen some pretty dumb things people do to maintain "motorcade integrity"; better to be smart and safe.

No problem-taken well-was just saying all input is worth trying to pull off--all these pointers are great--getting to fall in place needs sometimes precision timing and just about always , a plan B or C---but more importantly, convoy wish, extra people---and you can believe any MV9 planers are beginning to fill their note books ....

I'll take the hit on getting us the the BBQ since I was leading the pack.
I've been to Lexington Barbeque many times and this was the first time I followed my GPS... stupid biotch! :mad2:
Instead of getting off on 52, I should have continued up 85 and got off at 64, made a left hand turn and we would have been on the right side of the road for BBQ. No U turns.

You've never seen a speed trap on a rural state highway? It's all in how you define terms.
Though I do suppose that unleashing the MK-19 on a radar unit could be construed as excessive...
