View Full Version : Which Flowmaster series?

In my eternal quest for my exhaust system, I'm having trouble with which Flowmaster series to go with.
I'm thinking of: Super 40's (as I like Ctrlraven's Youtube Clips); Delta 40's; or 50's as I don't think I want to wake-the-nieghbors with them.
Has anyone had experience with the difference between them? There really isn't much out there to hear what the 50's really sound like.
The website has video clips, but that's really hard to tell.
I'm probably gonna go with 2.25" piping from the cats back, through an "H" pipe, then to the mufflers' and out the stock pipes with the resos left in.
(I really haven't decided on the 2nd Cat delete yet - could be risky).
Thanks.

Buddy of mine has the '50's on his Chevy p'up. It's got a low rumble not much louder than stock idling and it's pretty quiet while cruising but it's got a good sound when you romp on the gas.

Don't go buy my youtube videos, honestly the Flowmaster cause a lot of interior drone. I have been a Flowmaster user for the past 12 years. It was a night and day difference when I installed my Aero Turbine AT2525 series mufflers. Car was quieter at idle and cruising speeds (less drone) and louder when you really got on it, plus it flows more. Even the great DOOM had been a Flowmaster man and he changed over to the Aero Turbine mufflers.

I deleted my second cats and ran 2.5 inch piping through H-pipe w/ Magnaflow mufflers. Nice aggressive sound on romp. fairly quiet on highway

Would the 50's be abit too quiet for this car?
- I'm only comparing to the stock sound with reso's, and maybe/maybe-not Cat's in -

if you want a nice flowmaster tone and a tad bit louder then stock get 40s and do a muffler swap. crtlraven has a dyno run of mine with that setup but never posted it. i too was gonna get super 44s but went with the Aeros

I am doing a mid-pipe swap for more power. So that is why I've mentioned the 2nd cat removal (depending on emissions); so I know it will flow, and be a small amount louder.

The Aero's, for me, are a bit too loud for my taste; not a huge fan of Magnaflows or the cost of them - please no offense to any of you of course.
I've got Flows on my '91 Mustang, but might be a bit too loud for me now. Problem is that these were put into the Mustang in '92, so I couldn't even say what series they are' to make a comparison.

This is why I can't figure out a sound comparison of my own between the Super 40 / Delta 40 / and the quieter 50's, and have come to all of you for your knowledge and experience.

Dynomax Superturbos 25" overall length. Quiet when you cruise, louder when you WOT.

They do not: snap, spit, crackle, pop or drone - and outflow the stock mufflers.
Read all of the posts in the Exhaust forum since day one. (I did) lol

From quiet to loudest
Delta 50, Delta 40, Super 40 and Super 44.

Flowmasters don't flow.

I have super 44's on mine and like the sound. No noticeable drone in the car ... though I am still running all 4 cats. The H-pipe was removed and then replaced with a X-pipe.

Outside the car, slight rumble at idle.

I like the sound of it, for now. Wish it was a little deeper in sound is really the only change I want to make.

If this was at me, I need to be convinced I will pass smog still. CA is funny about those smog checks.

Can't say that I'll be doing any header swap in the forseeable future.

I've read up on these (after you posted about your Cobra). I have no idea where I'd even get these in Toronto; plus they seem to be the same design as the Flowmaster 50's. I wouldn't even know what size (length wise) to get for our cars. The muffler shops around here really only deal with Flows and Magnaflows. Here the Edelbrock's would have to be gotten seperately somewhere else.

The rear cats sit after the rear O2 sensor so if you replaced them with some straight pipe the vehicle would never know. If emissions said something about it, show them your front two. MD isn't as anal as CA is with emissions but they now have two people walk around with mirrors looking under the car.

I think maybe gdsqdcr also means the readings that the testing machine is going to read.
Whether the car knows they're there or not, the readings will be different on the tester. Emmisions will be higher...not because of the engine...because the 2nd cat didn't soak-'m-up.
This is my problem with this also. Not the visual thing. No I'm not a tree-hugger, but don't want to be told to replace them by the Ministry of Transport! I'd sure like to dump them though.

I know here they just plug into the OBDII port, scan and send you on your way. Vehicles that have OBDI systems they do an idle and 2500 rpm tail pipe sniffer test, no more roller drums to run the vehicles on.

+1 with high flow cats. I love the sound of my car. Tons of compliments. Only a drone at certain RPM range.
