Is 450 a fair price to get gears installed? Seems a bit high compared to what I've heard.

Is that just labor?

Sorry, should have put more information on this one... No, I'm buying new Ford Racing 4.10 gears, the shop is just installing.

Labor cost me $200.00
I supplied the gears, fluid, bearings, etc.

Looks like I'll keep looking for a different place to install. Not a lot of shops want to touch gears from what I can tell so far.

That's about on par with what most shops/dealers may charge. I paid another member who is a Ford mech to install mine. Talk to Blackenend300a or anyone else up that way to see who did theirs.

I've seen prices range from $200 to $500 for installation. Keep in mind, you want somebody that's familiar with 8.8 Ford rear ends.
A Mustang performance shop or any shop that does a lot of Ford performance work should be able to get the job done.
Don't scrimp on workmanship to save a couple bucks. Make the investment once and you'll have years of enjoyment out of your car.

I think I'll just spend a little extra dough and go to this guy. He knows what he's doing and asked me a couple questions about the car. Then told me how he would only do it if they are true Ford Racing gears due to the higher quality and fitment.

That's exactly the kind of guy you want working on your car.
Keep us posted, and enjoy the ride!

Did mine today. Still not done.
I paid for the gears, install kit, and oil. About $220.
They are charging me $340-400 for labor and bearings. I did not know I had to replace the bearings until today. Stupid me.
So.....about $560-620 all said and done. Probably $620 because the tech took it for a ride, it whined, and he has to take it all apart again. Hence the delay in being done.

The shop I had my new gears put in charges $200 for labor if you buy all the parts through them and $300 labor if you supply your own parts.

Sounds about right.
All parts and labor for me was about $450.00.
I'm in love with my MM all over again.
:burnout:
The difference is night and day IMO.
One of the better mods I have done yet.
Mike.

Probably a good idea to get the Ford Racing install kit that includes the axle bearings and have them replaced as well.

Thanks for the links man. I didn't know you needed axle bearings for the install, if i get all the parts I think he'll only charge me 330 for
labor. He said it was just a pain in the ass to do cuz he puts them in and takes them out 5 or six times to get the fitment right. I trust him more now that I know he built the rear end in his 95 cobra strictly drag car.
Another question: I have a tune on a chip, I know I need to get the switch for it but how do I actually add A 4.10 tune to it?

Contact Lidio, he may have already loaded a 4.10 tune on it, if not, he may be able to e-mail you one and you can just download it into your tuner.

I don't have a tuner, just a small chip with a port for the sct switch

You'll need the tune adjusted to modify the shift schedule and correct the speedometer variance after you get the gears installed.
You dont NEED to replace the carrier bearings or axle bearings to swap gears. Only if they are worn out.

I replaced mine because the bearings were cheap and since it was going to be apart........... why not?

Exactly, cheaper to do it then than to later on when you might need to.
Like Zack said you don't need them to install new gears, just a suggestion while everything is removed and open. Only takes a few extra mins to do the axle bearings. You don't need carrier bearings unless you replace the carrier.

I don't know how to modify the tune on the chip. How do I add a tune? And when I bought the car I replaced the axles seals and bearings, so I don't need
to replace.

As you guys know, the pinion bearings have to be replaced because they are pressed on. The other 2 that were replaced, not sure what they call them. I need to see a schematic. But they are in the differential, aligned with the axles. Carrier bearings? Ford said I HAD to replace them. ???

The bearings are:
Pinion bearing
Carrier bearing (2)
Axle bearing (2)
All have to be pressed on.
Like I said the bearings are cheap, why not replace them all while everything is apart :dunno:

It's cheaper to buy the complete install kit, axle bearings and diff bearings than just the diff bearings by themselves. When I had my 4.10s installed my rear diff spider gears were bad so I just bought a brand new FRPP 28-spline diff and had new bearings installed on it from the kit.

Family friend so my gear install is free and has a lifetime warranty. I just have to hear him pat himself on the back and tell the world how great he is while he does the work. Small price to pay because he sits there with a dial indcator making sure that I'm not .001 off on anything.

True, but if the pinion bearing or seal fails, you have to pull it all back out and re-set the crush collar again. May as well do it once and move on.

Cheap insurance, they wouldn't want you to come back complaining of a noise if the bearing should happen to fail not soon after the gears were installed.

Exactly. Sparta sells the complete kit with all the bearings, shims, gaskets, crush collar, pinion nut, and seals. I believe its the "C" kit. Its a little over $100 for everything.

That's what they did, except fot the axle bearings. Just got done not long ago. Sorry, I don't know much about rear ends. (CBT, here is your opportunity.....)
BTW, love the new low end grunt.

"True, but if the pinion bearing or seal fails, you have to pull it all back out and re-set the crush collar again. May as well do it once and move on."
Always use a solid pinion shim kit instead of the crush style. It makes seal replacement a bolt on with the flange. No need to check pinion pre-load.

i think your mixing up a crush collar and a shim
the crush collar is required to set pinion bearing pre-load. the shim under the pinion bearing is only for pinion depth and yes, should be solid.

I agree while your in there and its all apart for a couple of hundred bucks extra you better off to replace it all with new parts and not have to worry about the rear for a long time this what i always do when installing a new gear set

These Richmond Gear pinion bearing spacer and shim kits are great for installing your ring and pinion gear sets. They have a solid spacer that can be reused if you need to take apart and reassemble the carrier.
