Does anyone have insight into how it's actually done here?
I mean, is it only the "sniffer" in the tailpipe; drum rollers; OBDII port; visual? Is it only the % numbers that fail you?
I've never actually watched them do it.

Thank god I don't have to put up with another money grabbing ONTARIO gov't program. That is one thing us poor saps in Northern Ontario don't have to put up with... YET. We also pay the highest price for gas in ontario! $1.18 per litre for premium gas.

On the dyno, sniffer in the tail pipes for duals,no OBD port connection.

If all is good the test will be over in less than 10 mins.that will include warm up time and the test and paper work and out the door.

Just had mine done a few weeks back, and failed.
They put a sniffer in one side only, while it's on the rolls.
Mine has 127,000km on it, so it's just barely inside the warranty on the cats.
The dealer replaced the left side cats this week, and it failed the e-test again. Should get the right side done soon. Waiting for approval from Ford Canada.
I'm just lucky I caught it when I did. The work order is at $2700 for all new cats! Yikes.

It's been in and out of Performance Ford over the last couple weeks.
I'm driving it in between inspections, repairs, etc.

Hey jeffrt, when you said the cats were within warranty, is that the standard one or a purchased extended warranty? I have never had this Marauder or my first one in at any dealer here in Southern Ontario for service so never have even looked at the Warranty material. I assumed being a 2003 everything was well expired by now.

Hotford, where are you located? I would love a ride in a Trilogy Marauder! Any problems with passing the test with the Trilogy? I have been debating the Trilogy vs. build yourself route but the emissions issue scares me on the do it yourself route...
Thanks

I live in Pickering, which is about 3 hrs east of you....lol
E test is coming up this year but the pre test i did back in Aug, passed, they need to use both sniffers for the MM as it has dual exhaust, using one will not give them a accurate reading.

The eaton converstion would run no different when it come to the E test.
good luck either way you decide.

I will be at Sparta (london) next friday during the day as the track is rented all are welcome just let me know who's coming so I can make arrangements.

Ha ha!
Wish I had gone to Ken Knapp. It's been a runaround trying to get the parts covered. Ford agreed to replace the left side cats, since I had a bad rattle in there. Had that done on Monday, and it still failed, so now I'm waiting on approval for the right side.
The car first went in for this the week before Labour Day, and sat there for 3 days.

The cats are covered for 8 years, or 130000 km under factory warranty. They don't advertise that warranty too much.
I was almost there, and found that the car stunk pretty bad, so I had it checked out. Glad I did!

Thanks jeffrt on the info re the cats, that is good to know. I just cracked 60k on my Marauder.
Hotford, which car(s) are you bringing to Sparta? I am working Friday but might have to adjust my schedule. Got a few friends with Terminators and Lightnings who may be itchin for one more trip down the 1320 before it gets too cold!

According to a member on vicsters.ca, the Crown Vics only have to pass the idle test, they don't go on the rollers. Grand Marquis have to do the rollers, not sure about the Marauder. They test the gas cap first, if it fails they don't even bother doing the rest of the test.

Otherwise they stick a probe into a single tail pipe. They would usually cover the other one up. Then they drive on the rollers at 40 km/h for like 30 seconds. My Marquis failed last time I went even though there was nothing wrong with it. I went back again a few days later. I drove around to warm it up before hand though and asked the guy to rev it at 2k for like a minute before hand. It passed with flying colors.

With my Marauder and with my old 91 Grand Marquis all I had to do is the idle test, no dyno. The reason is simple, the place I go to is too small to accomodate these vehicles on the dyno so idle test only. If you fail the idle test, your not exactly legal or there is something seriously wrong with your car lol

Sure, I go to "oil changers". There are plenty of them accross Canada Im sure. I went to 2 different ones and same story both times. "Your car is too big for the dyno so we are just gonna do the idle test". Fine by me!!!!

I bought my 03 Marauder in April 2010 and for licensing it passed without any problems at a Ford shop. 63,000km. HC ppm were 6. CO% was zero.

Our 1996 Grand Marquis LS (which I bought in 2001 with 101,000km on her) has always done well - - highest reading any time we've gone is 8 HC ppm versus a limit of 52. CO% is usually zero. I always go with a warm engine, usually some mid-grade fuel in the tank for the day leading up to it. The 96 has 479,000km now and still runs great - - winter beater for me; daily driver for my wife in the summer.

Funny Drive Clean story - - in my town there's a Volkswagen dealership that handles Drive Clean. One year the young VW guy brings the 96 Grand Marquis in, and positions it with the front wheels on the rollers. He gets out, hooks up the exhaust tubes, pops the hood. Watching him through the window from the customer lounge I was getting ready to intervene, when all of a sudden he realized he had driven a RWD into the shop - - you'd think he'd know the difference simply by the size of the car if not from direct knowledge of the platform itself. Once he popped the hood I believe he put 2&2 together when he noticed the engine wasn't transverse-mounted. Hey, we should all learn something every day.

That's the most fun I've had at a Drive Clean so far.
