I have a used 3.27 gear set waiting to be installed on my Grand Marquis. I got the set from a member here.
I noticed a few chipped teeth on the pinion gear. Two of them are not easily noticeable, but the third is.
Look at the tooth in the 11:30 position:

From a different angle:

It does not come close to the wear marks from where it was originally set in the donor car. Is this okay since it will not be in contact with the ring gear, or could this cause the teeth to be weakened and fail? I only have mild add-ons on the 2V so I am maybe putting down just over 200WHP. But I do intend to take it to the drag strip a few times a year.

I don't know why they aren't hotlinking for some and not for others. But I have pics here: http://richgannon.net/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=22
blackbeauty, I might hit you up about the 3.55s, although I don't think I want to go that high with the amount of highway travel I do.

Can I ask as to why it will be money thrown away? Will they fail/wear somehow even though the chipped area is nowhere near the wear area?

I wouldn't put that in my rear end!
I'd be asking for my money back!

While the typical gear contact is the middle of the teeth you are starting with a part that has obvious structural problems. Use of these parts would be considered, "borrowed time" as if/when these parts fail it could be catastrophic resulting in additional parts and labor, I wouldn't use them

DON'T INSTALL IT!!!!!!!!!!
This is what will happen. It destroyed my eaton posi and now I'm back to a ford posi and I paid for the labor twice.

I've got a complete 3.27:1 Traction-Lok 8.8" rear out of my '95 Grand Marquis for $125.00.
$175.00 with almost new rotors & pads (less than 400 miles on them), plus the calipers and hoses.
Problem would be shipping the rear....:o

Damn this is aggravating. Garbage bin it is. :banghead:
How many people here use used gears without any trouble/noise? Is it an okay and common thing or do most people opt for brand new gears?

A brand new ring and pinion are cheap enough that's its worth replacing. Plus the labor costs and time to install makes it a piece of mind that it won't fail.

Not a problem as long as your partner leads... :D
Okay, back to the topic. ^^^^^^ what Bob said on the damaged gears. ^^^^^
BTW, did the seller indicate the pinion was chipped prior to the sale? If not, I'd ask for my money back.

He did not mention it. I can't say for certain if it happened before shipping or during shipping. I can't find the chipped tooth bits in the box/packing paper. It looks to my untrained eye like it definitely happened after removal from the donor car since the broken area is clean and free of any gear oil like the rest of it.
I'll talk to him and ask, but I'm guessing I'm SOL in getting some of all of my money back anyway.

Chances are it was hard removing the pinion and after he hammered it out it fell on the floor. Thats why its chipped. I perosnally would look elsewhere for another set.
