"System too lean"

I will try to explain what is happening, please keep in mind that i'm probably in the bottom quartile in the mechanical ability department around here.
It started after a bit of knocking, it has the SCT tune running 91 octane, i filled up {about 2/3rds of a tank} with 94 octane, after a couple miles i hit the gas hard and it and it bogged down, a 1st, then ran fine, no more knocking.
Now after the car has been shut down for more than an hour or so when i go to start it, the idle goes on a rollercoaster ride between 500 and 1k rpm, there is also a unburned fuel smell. Revving the idle up to 1500 for 5 or so seconds corrects the issue. Once up and running everything is normal. This morning the cold start was fine as the idle is higher.

I put in a bottle of gasline system cleaner yesterday, hopefully this is the problem but i doubt it.
I see from trying to find a solution on this forum and from google that it could be one of several things. I will take it in to have it looked at ASAP, the price you pay for low mechanical ability, he he.

Just thought i would tap the large knowledge bank here first, perhaps my symptoms point to something known here.

Thanks,

The car is running lean on banks 1/2 what ever you do stay out of WOT if you are hearing spark know take you foot off the gas, does the car have a CAK is the car N/A or S/C the best thing to do is data log the car if you have a Xcal

Thanks for your reply, the car does have a k&n cold air filter and is not supercharged.

I tried to data log but i'm not sure of what i'm looking at, do these numbers mean anything to you,

long ft1 1.21
long ft2 1.25

No doubt its tough to diagnos problems with a rookie such as myself, i will take it to the ford dealer ASAP.

Thanks again

Monitor your short term fuel trims what is you EEC code
The short term trims bounce around just under 1 and are similar, boost the rpm to 1500 and they bounce around .80.

Having trouble finding a "EEC code.

you are running about 20% lean is the car a 03/04 do you have a xcal, how long has the CAK been on the car, this can be tune related, when was the last time you changed the fuel filter, read the stratagy with the Xcal

The car is an '03, i've only had the car 6 weeks so i'm not sure of the details.

"read the stategy" not sure what you mean, it's running the '91 tune, has the '93 tune available, the only info i could find on the stategy was these numbers,
RZASABZ,
i'm betting these numbers/letters mean nothing to you either, ha.

I will take it easy till i get it in, let them look at it.

Thanks

I am trying to help, RZASABZ this is not a valid strategy code for a Marauder, I suggest you try and get some help.

For your information if you get the correct code I can tell you what EEC you have it probably is BMD0. And any SCT dealer can help

With mentioned codes causing a lean condition I would relace your fuel filter behind rear passanger door along frame rail. Take care not to break plastic clips. Also check for vacum leak hose that goes to FPRS.

Good to go!:D

Changed the oil, fuel filter, cleaned the MAF, and found the probable culprit - the K&N cold air filter wasn't quite secure to the top of the engine and air was leaking in, it was quite gunked up in there, he readjusted the brace and cleaned everything up.

Thanks for the help.

Always the goofy stuff! Glad it all worked out and was nothing serious. ;)
