..It's time to sit in the lawn and change rear brake pads, pads already bought. I've read here before, that some members have taken the emergency brake shoes completely off, is this a good idea, and if so what parts do I need to remove, besides the shoes, star adjuster, springs, hold downs. I never use the E-brake, and I've read that the shoes de-laminate, get hung up in the brake drum, and cause problems.

Tony, my e-brake shoes were just loose inside. They fell off when I removed the rotor.
I just used the star adjuster and ratcheted the e-brake mechanism all the way down so it wouldn't hang up on the inside of the rotor.
No problems since.
Sorry I can't be more specific...sending from my phone at this time. You can call me after 3:30 today if youwant more input....

Personally. I would not eliminate the e-brake. It is the ONLY mechanical means to stop your car if all else fails. It's not much, but it's something.....
Just something to consider.

If you're just changing the pads it's pretty straight forward, just take notice of the angle of the caliper before you pull it off and when you put it back on so it sits right.

I agree if you're going to just replace pads I wouldn't worry about the e-brake. If you're going to replace the rotor you may want to get a set of e-brake shoes just incase they have fallen apart. If they're in good shape then adjust them before you install the new rotor and return the shoes to the auto parts store.

It's called an EMERGENCY brake for a reason, I wouldn't get rid of them.

After working in public safety and seeing what some people consider 'emergencies' (locked out of car, wrong order at McDonalds, dog barking), I've come to the conclusion that an 'emergency' brake is probably more important in name than function.
I'll roll the dice.

It's actually a parking brake, I don't know where the emergency brake came from or how it caught on but in any kind of automotive stopping "emergency" that brake won't do anything really. If the cable don't snap I don't see what good locking up your rear wheel will do in an "emergency"..... unless they forget your fries at the drive through. :D

Dont know about where you are...but here in Texas you need the Parkng Brake to pass state inspection.....I didnt know that before my Suburban failed for that very reason...just had to have it adjusted and went back and passed.
