Has anyone done the rear suspension conversion from air springs to coil springs? I'm trying to find out the pro's and con's on doing this.
One guy here did it, I think its MrBluGruv?
Im local to you and could fix your problems for way cheaper than a dealer or shop.

Welcome to the site, many have done this, and I'm sure they will chime in.

The airbags are easy to adjust, more comfy ride( my opinion). But you do have the risk of them going out.
The springs you put them on and forget about them.
I wouldn't do it.

+1 i agree the air bags give a better ride (when properly adjusted) and you also have the option of easily adjusting your ride height!
with out spacers!!!!!!:banana2:

Indeed, I did the HD coil swap. My air bags were no longer holding air, so instead of fixing it I took the cheap way out, I'll make no bones about that. However, I don't believe the car is an uncomfortable ride at all, especially after I switched from 245/45 in the rear to 255/55 Nitto 420S in the rear. It felt kinda like it handled better at first too, but with the new tires that's not necessarily the case I think (taller sidewall and all). Honestly it's a cheap simple swap/fix and you won't have to worry about it again for a LOOOOOOONG time.
Pros:
Easy
Cheap
Practically no further maintenance required, including negation of supporting parts such as air ride compressor
Consistent sturdy ride
Cons:
Not factory any more
Not adjustable
(Possibly) rougher ride

+1...I recently did the swap as well with Suncore Industries conversion kit. Simple swap that I personally think made the car handle better but did take a bit away from the ride comfort. I have a set of well worn tires on right now but when i get new ones on in a few weeks maybe that will help with the comfort.

what type of coil springs do you put on when you replace air bags. Grand marquis ,police crown vic. Coil springs. Do you ask for heavy duty of some sort?

i have rode in grandmarquis and crown vics. And thought they had smoother ride in back than marauder.

You'll also lose the height adjustability if you go to springs.

The auto leveling when you honker it down with payload is nice too.

True you will lose height adjustment, but i like the stance its at now. If you follow this link, http://www.suncoreindustries.com/MERCURY-MARAUDER-suspension.php, the second one down would be what your looking at. I got the heavy duty springs because as a college student i do on occasions have to move heavy things in the trunk.

i suppose if funds were very tight i could understand some one doing this, but theres no way in hell i would remove an auto load leveling suspension only to replace it with "cargo coils" its part of what makes the mm special, when family piles in its nice to see the car show its muscle (and not sag) automaticaly adjust, and your on your way!
coil springs are for cabs! lol

Don't forget the cool 1970s jacked up look after three good sized adults get out of the back seat... or trunk, whatever your pleasure may be. Sir. Ma'am.
