Hey guys,
I'm shopping around for a remote starter for this winter. First thing I did is call the dealer to find out how much they would charge me. I am very surprise with their answer and price. Apparently, our cars have too much electronics to have a simple remote starter. I would need to get one that comes with the power locks, trunk etc. They are asking 500$ for the whole thing installed. Is this true? I just want a simple thing, nothing fancy. Anyways I'm gonna be shopping around because this seems quite high but I would like to hear from the guys that have remote starters and how much they paid for the whole thing.
Thanks
That don't seem to bad being I heard some people paid $300 or more for the factory remote start alone.

Really? Wow, I had no Idea. Thanks for your comment but I'll wait to see what others have to say and do more shopping before I make my decision.

viper. Remote start, kill feature, anti grind, audible bump and break in horn. $450 Mickey Shore Detroit area. Your car is worth the protection

I think thats what they want to put in my car too a VIPER remote starter....well if that's the price that's the price...I just never had to purchase one before so I'm a little ignorant on the matter.

plus add 60 bucks for the security module they need to install because of the chipped key

$500 sounds about right for a Viper alarm/remote started installed with the module needed.

IMO, Best deal around here in d-town is to leave your car locked in an un-assuming garage during the winter. Buy a $1000 beater Marquis to drive instead. That $450 you would have spent could go towards the beater. Hell, they'll pull your F&R bumpers off while it's sitting and not even trip the alarm....

Ive wondered just what is the logic of having "remote start"? I can only think of two things, either to get a car warmed up when its freezing outside or to maybe detonate a car bomb wired to the engine. Is there some good reason Im not thinking of?

When it's freezing outside. Nothing is more humiliating than having your wife hit a button to get her car warmed up from inside the house, and then you have to go out trudging in the snow to start and warm up your car...that is parked behind hers....

Yup, thats exactly what remote starters are for. Trust me, around here when it can get lower then -30C during the winter time. It is a very nice feature to have. Sometimes in the summer, when its really hot to cool it down...

I got the dealer installed remote start alarm in the Marauder.....got it when I bought the Marauder....love it....gets the car nice and warm during the cold months and nice and cool during the hot dog days of summer. If I had to do it all over again....I would and did on my Suburban.....the one for my Marauder was about 500.00 from the dealer....its like a Code Alarm. The one for my Burb I got for 450.00 with window tint installed. Its an AutoPage.....love it too. There are ones with all kinds of bells and whistles such as opening and closing your windows.

From inside I hit the garage open button, then start the MM. Many times walking across a parking lot I'll start the MM for 30 seconds before driving away, then the air compressor has already done it's thing. If you leave the EATC on Auto you can get into a cold car in summer and a warmed car in the winter.
I have the OEM Code Alarm, got it professionally installed. It's clean and simple factory looking, at night you can start the car and hit the unlock button and get illuminated entry. No crazy sirens and UFO like features of "ghetto" type alarm systems.

one thing i dont like about the factory alarms is that it has a max timer of 15 min run time. the viper on my truck is set to run for an hour, i find 15 min is not long enough, when it's below -25 it needs 20 min min usually leave it running for 30. so I have to start it twice. it has gotten as cold as -48 without the wind chill here last winter. and thats -54 in fahrenheit, hear alot of interesting sound when you start your car in that temp lol

Interesting noises for sure hahaha! Do you have a block heater? I find those things to be very helpful when its very cold. I don't think our cars came with them...

yup, but at those temps block heaters dont help. actually when it gets colder then -25 i usually dont drive the marauder, too hard on the air bags. sometimes my truck wont even start when it's plugged in so I need to get the 100,000 btu diesel Mr heater out and stick it under my truck to heat the engine. then it goes abot 15 min later.
