For the past week I have been chasing what I thought was a bad pulley. It turned out it may be the Alt clutch. The symtoms were at low speed 900 rpms a sound of belt squeel & the volt meter in the gauge pod showed up at 10 amps. This went on for ten mins while in stop & go traffic almost like the alt pulley was seezing up. Then out of no where the squeel stoped & the volt meter jumped up ot 12.5. Whats up with that ?

It certainly is possible that the clutch pulley is starting to "strip" and thus allow slippage in the wrong direction. That could account for squalling noise and low voltage.

Just last week we got a news letter from Gates via O'reilly's, where they have a cutaway pic of the type of clutch pulley that is on our cars. I keep meaning to bring home, scan it and post it.

Can some one tell me how the clutch on the alt works & how to check function ?

Thanks Dave just wondering if I can be repaired or if it is the clutch & process to be sure it is the clutch or if I just need to replace the entire alternator.

I understand. I just need to know how to check to make sure it is the clutch in the alt.
