I'm on my third alternator and can't risk going any long distances with the battery lamp comming on at slow engine speeds,.
I have always got a OEM replacement at the dealer when I needed to replace.
The last time I kept my core and tried to have it rebuilt.
I wanted to have a ready in hand replacement for when this occured again.
The shop claimed it was not worth rebuilding that it was complete toast.
On my trip to Michigan for Woodward in Aug. the battery lamp came on a few times only for 20 seconds or so.
last night the lamp came on several times at slow engine speeds on a very consistant basis.
I still may have warranty on this one, I can not remember how long it was since I replaced it .
So I miss out on drag racing today with my pal LOWBUCKMM :bigcry:
I could not justify keeping a new alternator on the shelf for just in case.
It would happen when the dealers are closed.
If you replaced your alternator with something other than stock oem dealer alternator what did you choose?
How has it performed? did it last any better than stock?
I looked around at FLAPS on the computer(Sunday), no one has it in stock.

I purchased one from Az. about two years ago, it was the wrong one, so a local rebuilder repaired mine, worked fine ever since.

I'm using a DB Electrical 250 amp. It has been sent back for repair once. Keeping a spare on hand is a good idea, since a new replacement may come with a clutch-type pulley which has to be replaced with a standard pulley and it requires a special tool which may not be available when an emergency arises.

I just installed a DB Electrical 250amp alternator also. Came with a regular pulley, not a clutch pulley. Working flawlessly so far, have about 1,000 miles on it.
I'd look into upgrading the wiring. I went with 2GA for the power & ground.

Mine came with a pulley (not a clutch pulley). I've had no problems with it, noises or anything else.

I re did the charging cable from the alternator cutting out one of the splices.
The battery lamp came on again on the way home from the bank.
I am gonna test the alternator to see what it is putting out.

Why would your alternator go out so often? Maybe something is causing it to fry?
Bradley G

I should be good now, I had a loose connection at the alternator after repairing the cable.
Just was in a hurry and forgot to torque the nut.
The alternator tested fine charging @ 14 volts, Battery tested good too!

I replaced it last year in January 2009, so it made it 1 year and ten months of service.
There is a one year 12K mi. warranty on reman parts from Ford.
I just got back from justbobs house, he let me borrow the little spline tool to get the clutched pulley off again .
The alternator was 180 sumthing with tax.
I have to bring the core back.
Off to the FLAPS to get the serpentine belt removal tool.

Mines having the same issue. Alternator and battery both ok. When parked overnight it will not start. From what I can tell nothing is on to drain the battery overnight and it's starting to frustrate me too. I'm about to freak out if I can't figure this out! Definitely keep us posted!

Asking out of ignorance here: What's the problem with the clutched pulley? I bought a new (reman) Motorcraft OEM alternator, and it came with this type of pulley. Seems to be charging just fine.
My old alternator is still good. It's just got a lot of miles on it. I'll keep it around and take on trips and such along with other tools/goodies.

Keeping a spare on hand is a good idea, since a new replacement may come with a clutch-type pulley which has to be replaced with a standard pulley and it requires a special tool which may not be available when an emergency arises.

You can use either the clutched pulley or the non-clutched pulley.

Yeah, I figured that much out (since mine works fine).
Fordnut's post makes it sound like it's necessary to change pulleys. I am curious why this idea is floating around.

Fordnut's post makes it sound like it's necessary to change pulleys. I am curious why this idea is floating around.Trilogy installs and DIY Eaton setups relocate the alternator and spin it "backwards" so you can't use the clutched pulley. I know of no reason it would matter on a stock setup.

All he said was DB alternators are 'iffy' in terms of reliability. DB alternators need a non-clutched pulley. Keeping a spare alternator on hand either with a non-clutched or no pulley at all will prevent you from being stranded, awaiting a repair without the super special tool required to remove the cluth type pulley that will most lilely come with an over-the counter replacement alternator from FLAPS.

Just some clarification....
DB's has 2 stock (130amp) output alternators, one with the clutch pulley, one without.
All their high output (200, 220 & 250amp) alternators come with a non-clutch pulley.

That's helpful, I knew I had seen some with the clutch pulley and others with a standard one, just didn't know why.

They claim the non-clutched pulley is an "underdrive" pulley. Looks exactly the same size as a stock pulley.
