View Full Version : Under hood squeal?

The other day my belt started to squeal I thought it was due to the rain because it will do that once in awhile. Well it is still squealling and driving me nuts. I looked at the belt and it looks in good shape. I cranked the car and was under the hood looking and it sounds like its coming from the passenger side. Is there anything I can try before I take it to the stealership? Maybe wd40 behind the puppies and tensioned? Any good advice is appreciated.
Thanks in advance

While the engine is running, Is your tensioner pulley arm pretty still or going back and forth at all? Also, may want to take the belt off and see if the idler pulley spins freely. (engine off of course)

I figured it was a pulley just wanted to narrow down the crap a dealership would try and tell me. The belt has around 30k on it but I was told it looks good by a mechanic I know.

Does it do it while the car has barely started then goes away? both my MM's have done this. Its annoying as hell!

It does it the whole time its running. The arm stays pretty still. While idling it is quoted the under acceleration also almost goes away while decelerating.

DO NOT spray WD-40 or any other chemical on the belt, including so-called "belt dressing", unless you intend to replace the belt anyway. Water is OK, but nothing else. Most belt squeal or chirp is caused by pulleys and/or the tensioner, not the belt itself unless it's badly deteriorated and needs replacing anyway.

I wasn't gonna spray it on the belt. Was gonna spray it behind the pulleys. How many pulleys is there to replace? Just trying to figure out how much I am gonna have to spend.

There are 2 idler pulleys and one on the tensioner. If you take the belt off, you can spin them by hand to find the bad one. They're very easy to replace...no need to waste big money involving the dealer.

do yourself a favor and pick up a cheap stethescope for $10.00 and pinpoint the exact pulley in 2 seconds.

Thanks everyone for the assistance. I replaced the idler pulley and of course it wasn't that. So went and got the tensioner arm and replaced it and fought to get the belt back on and tadaa no squealing. Thank God so now I don't have to be embarrassed driving around town.

Mine all went in a matter of 2 weeks. First the smooth pulley, then the ribbed, then the Belt shredded even though it looked fine. Then replaced the belt and tensioner and all is good.

Just go to www.tascafordparts.com or a closer online dealer and order

YW7Z8678AA $38.42 $0.00 $20.28
Maintenance & lubrication - Engine service - Belts & pulleys - Serpentine idler pulley
Serpentine idler pulley, all models 2000 - 2006

This is the Ribbed pulley which does not show up when you try to look it up even at the dealer.

2W7Z*5B209*AA Tensioner $37.21

P.S you can't order the tensioner pulley seperate from Ford, some aftermarket do offer the smooth pulley for this part.

XR3Z*8678*BA "Kit" Smooth idler pulley $16.14

($10 less then the Duralast one)

3W3Z*8620*AA Belt $24.68

The belt is not normally stocked at most Dealers or parts stores. The cheap Valuecraft Autozone does not even fit. I now have a nice NAPA Gold on my car and the Motorcraft one is sitting in the spare tire as a backup (and maybe to throw on for a show etc..) The DOHC belt is unique with the two idler pulleys and combined with 6000 rpms Stock WOT shift point and extra tension on the belt the front end accessory drive is more prone to wear and failure than a Grandpa driven 2V Towncar etc..

My ribbed pulley showed no play in the bearing but HOWLED something fierce. The smooth pulley had a worn bearing at only 55K. The belt lost one whole rib on me after only 1 week while running on the new Duralast smooth pulley.

Now I have all FORD pulleys on there and no noises.

Common sense would be .... since all the pulleys go round 'n round the same amount why not replace them all at the same time?

Same goes for hoses.... if one is bad the others are not far behind.

But that's just me........................ ;)

I've worked on alot of car and the owners only wanted one belt or one hose changed..... Guess what? They came back to have the others replaced plus antifreeze, etc.

I was in denial as I had only replaced 1 pulley in about 200,000 miles of Modular miles over my last 4 cars. Alas even with 55K miles the Marauder showed me how the DOHC setup chews up the belt and pulleys.

Alas even with 55K miles the Marauder showed me how the DOHC setup chews up the belt and pulleys.Phoebe has 140,xxx miles and I haven't replaced either pulley or the tensioner. Granted we are the third owners, but we got her at 87,000 miles and haven't had any FEAD-related problems. I installed a new Gatorback about 20,000 miles ago, but that was just because of my paranoia, not because the other belt was bad.

It might just have gunk on it. Take a wet rag and wipe off as much belt and pulley surfaces as you can reach. Then bump the starter and do it again 2 or three times. You'll be surprised how much gunk will come off a "clean" looking belt.

Just did all mine (real Ford/Motorcraft ones)- I think my part numbers are a little different.
