PEARL HARBOR
December 7th, 1941

Pearl Harbor
On Sunday, December 7th, 1941 the Japanese launched a surprise attack against the U.S. Forces stationed at Pearl Harbor , Hawaii By planning this attack on a Sunday, the Japanese commander Admiral Nagumo, hoped to catch the entire fleet in port. As luck would have it, the Aircraft Carriers and one of the Battleships were not in port. (The USS Enterprise was returning from Wake Island , where it had just delivered some aircraft. The USS Lexington was ferrying aircraft to Midway, and the USS Saratoga and USS Colorado were undergoing repairs in the United States ..)
In spite of the latest intelligence reports about the missing aircraft carriers (his most important targets), Admiral Nagumo decided to continue the attack with his force of six carriers and 423 aircraft. At a range of 230 miles north of Oahu , he launched the first wave of a two-wave attack. Beginning at 0600 hours his first wave consisted of 183 fighters and torpedo bombers which struck at the fleet in Pearl Harbor and the airfields in Hickam, Kaneohe and Ewa. The second strike, launched at 0715 hours, consisted of 167 aircraft, which again struck at the same targets.
At 0753 hours the first wave consisting of 40 Nakajima B5N2 'Kate' torpedo bombers, 51 Aichi D3A1 'Val' dive bombers, 50 high altitude bombers and 43 Zeros struck airfields and Pearl Harbor Within the next hour, the second wave arrived and continued the attack.

WOW! Those are some great pics! But a very sad day indeed, That is sadly been forgoten as the generations past My Grandfather was there when this happened. But sadly as so many others he is now gone and with him and so many others go the stories. Its like the more of them pass on to a better place so does a part of history. NO one could tell you a story better then someone who lived it. GOOD BLESS THOSE SOLDIERS!

Snopes debunked this "story"
The pics are real, however they have been in the USN archives since the '40s

I kinda suspected as much. There were so many shots from different locations that it is hard to believe that they came from a single camera especially from a sailor who would have been up to his ears in alligators during the attack and not out snapping pics.

Not offended here. The pics are nice. The facts surrounding the "lost" camera are inaccurate .... that's all.

I had just had my 13th birthday--I was baby-sitting for my next door neighbor--listening to radio station WLW, New Orleans--heard the news flash and ran home and told my family--my Mom was in shock--she had 3 sons over 17 years old--her heart must have broken--all 3 went to war and , thank God ,all came home--one in Europe and 2 in Pacific--if you think the A-bomb shouldn't have been used--think of the ONE MILLION mothers who would have received the dreaded telegram--"The President is sad to inform you your son/husband has been killed in action while invading Japan". I was 17 when the war ended--I already had my private pilot's license and wanted to fly--got my wish--Aviation Cadets in 1949. In all, in Ginny's and my family, there were 11 veterans. Our military service changed all our lives for the best--we were very lucky. Our hearts and prayers go out to the servicemen and women and their families who are involved in the conflicts around the world. God Bless Them .
The pictures stirred some vivid memories--I have spent many hours visiting the many the places shown in the pics--stuck my fingers in the bullet holes in Scofield Barracks-- looked down the ravine the Japanese planes used to line-up with "Battleship Row"--spent hours at the Arizona Memorial--talked to those who were there that day--actually spent a few hours with a Japan Airlines Captain who was in the first wave of torpedo bombers --it all gets very real. Thanks, Dennis for posting this. REMEMBER OUR VETERANS, Humbly, Maury
