Whining

Hello guys and gals I have a 2003 blk MM and there is a wining noise coming from under the hood .. I guess it's the power steering but I'm not sure. I turn the wheel and it gets louder . How hard is it to do this job and how much is the part if it is the PS

Is the fluid level good?

Try changing out the fluid.

If it's the pump. it's not hard to swap out.

A FLAPS should have a replacement pump.

paSS, although the power steering pump is the more likely cause, without hearing the sound we can only speculate. It may be just an idler pulley...turning the wheel when stationary takes a lot of force so the P/S pump is loaded down adds strain to the whole FEAD system. You really need to have someone turn the wheel back and forth while you listen carefully for where the sound it coming from.

It's also not a bad idea to flush the P/S fluid anyway.

OK--I cannot believe CBT hasn't chimed in on this yet to ask-----"ARE you sure its not from that blower (Eaton , Trilogy, etc) in there!!!

i checked under my car there is a puddle of PS fluid. the hoses dont seem to be broken at all. but there is fluid

That's not a good sign.

Check the reservoir, fill if needed.

Start the car and have someone turn the wheel both ways while you look under the hood.

There may be a pinhole in one of the hoses that will only be evident under pressure.
