View Full Version : We got guests!

The Windy City Marauders are expecting guests the week of 26 Dec. through 1 Jan. '04. Mary (MM03MOK- aka Bunny, aka....oh nevermind) will be in town from the East coast (she's running away from snow) and Jefferson-Mo and his lovely bride will be visiting the area as well. I'm trying to arrange some entertainment in their honor, but it's getting clogged up, so, here's the deal.

Sunday, 28 December, we will meet at the Museum of Science and Industry at 11 AM. We'll see what we can in the few hours the Museum is open on Sunday, and then go someplace yet decided for dinner. I'm leaning towards taking our guests out to our Chicken Run, so, they can sample the bacon double-cheeseburgers, and drive on old Route 66. If you can't make the Museum, maybe you can make the Chicken run about 6 PM?

Big Joe P has a counter offer for a Bears Game at the Exit, and this is a generous offer, but I'd like to see y'all come out with kids, and I don't think that would work this time around. Big Joe, it's a great idea, please ask again.

So, there it is, I hope ya'll can come out and enjoy a Sunday afternoon with us. The rest of the week is open for suggestions.

Because my son and I will be driving in on the 27th, we will need a recommended landing strip to park the winged marauder and a nice hotel so we don't leave here at 5am to make the 11am rendezvous.

A name and a street address so I can plot it in Streets & Trips GPS system is all I need!

See you all on the 28th.

Sounds like fun!! Too bad I'm parked for the winter :(

Hey Mary, if you folks are coming across the Ohio turnpike, I am exactly 6 miles north of Ohio exit 11 on I-77 exit 151. Eleven houses west, on the right....the big red farmhouse at the top of the hill.

Feel free to drop in for a hot chocolate and a splash of 106 octane before you resume your migration west toward the windy!:D

If snow is predicted on the 27th, 28th or 29th then I will not make it either. I never drive in salt or wet roads with my cars in the winter. However, if it is going to be dry and clear, the roads are all I am worried about and we'll be there!

This is great news, John, love to have you come visit. There are decent hotels just down the street from our Chicken meet. The closest is the Fairfield, you'll drive right past it.

First, the restaurant...

Dell Rhea's Chicken Basket
645 Joliet Rd. (Frontage Rd.)
Willowbrook, IL. 60521
(630) 325-0780

Fairfield Inn - Willbrook Chicago
820 West 79th Street, Hinsdale, IL 60521
(630) 789-6300
(630) 789-6300 (fax)

Further north on Rt. 83 by two stoplights, a Red Roof Inn.
http://www.redroof.com/reservations/inn_details.asp?innNumber=167

Either way, you're at the junction of Route 83 and I-55, and from there, the MSI is north on I-55 to Lake Shore Drive (Route 41) then south on LSD to 57th Street. Maybe we could hook up at the Denny's for a snack before hand.

Lynn, are you interested in meeting here first?

Okay, guys, check in, eh? Let us know who's coming? It's going to be a good time. Meet us before, during or after, here's 3 opportunities to welcome out of state guests.

Mary, any chance Jefferson can join us?

Make sure when you are there to take the U505 tour. The submarine tour ends January 4, 2004. It will be taken to a new home being built at the museum, and totally restored. The exibit will not be able to be seen until the spring of 2005. Don't miss it it's a great piece of ameican war history. Maybe someday the museum will get the cave Bin Ladin has been hidding out in, that's once we catch the bastard. Have fun and maybe I might catch you guys at the musuem.

Barry The Bunny will have her wings on for this trip. My Blackbird hasn't been more than 100 miles from home. She gets homesick. Is that a new cocktail? 106 Cocoa? Thanks for the invite, though. Much appreciated and looking forward to the trip to Cleveland next Spring!

Without a doubt you need to go to Ruth's Chris Steak House (312) 321-2725 give them a call and let them know you'll be in from out of town. They are super accomidating and treat you like a king. How long are you going to be in town? I'll be happy to recommend some more places if need be.

A few years back, I had a fantastic (albeit a little pricey) steak meal at a steak house just across from the Hard Rock Cafe downtown, just up the street from the Excalibur (I think that's what it's called). How does this eatery rate in the grand Chicago scheme of things?

Slowpoke
12-23-2003, 07:41 PM
that would be THE CHOP HOUSE - of of Chicago's very best steak restaurants. Draws crowds from everywhere - awesome food - very crowded on weekends. right above the door is a Christmas tree - with lights - and yes - it's there all year round. Situated right next door to the only Walgreens downtown with it's own [free] parking lot. I park there at least 4 times a week. Funny and ironic that it's located across the street from the Hard Rock which, IMHO, serves the worst food in the city.

also good are

Gene & Georgetti's -- a man's steak restaurant for men who want to eat meat.

Magnum's -- for the middle aged tourist who wants a great steak along with some eye candy.

Gibson's -- part of the infamous 'Viagra Triangle' - good, but not great steak (on par with Ruth Chris) but unbelievable to watch the aging men chase after the young hotties at the bar.

Morton's -- no explanation necessary - a delight!

Schula's -- new, but very good [according to my sister-in-law]

Carmichael's -- a $5 cab ride from downtown; no tourists ever find this place. The steaks are cooked perfectly and the place is huge. I like the iceberg 'wedge' salad they serve.

for pizza there is Lou Malnati's - I would bet one testicle that after you eat one of their pizza's you declare it the finest you've ever had. Or instead, try Geno's East, Uno or Due

for fast food there is Al's Italian Beef - I think I've had 100 of these in my life and each time they hand me the sandwich, my mouth begins to water. Also serve the finest french fries money can buy. Or you can try Mr. Beef - prefered by Jay Leno. Try Al's and Mr. Beef and see which you prefer.

The Knickerbocker is a great hotel - my parents met at a wedding - not their own, of course - in the ballroom there. Check out the ballroom - it's on the main floor not far from the entrance - it's gorgeous and pre-empted Saturday Night Fever with a plastic floor with lights underneath.

any other questions? feel free to post and i will answer.

Big Joe P

Born and raised in Chicago, having eaten quite a few meals in lots of neighborhoods, here are my suggestions for what you are looking for, downtown. DEEP DISH PIZZA = Lou Malnati's 439 N. Wells. HOT DOGS & BURGERS = Portillo's corner of Clark & Ontario. ITALIAN BEEF & SAUSAGE = Al's Beef corner of Wells & Ontario. STEAK = I have to second the vote for Ruth's Chris corner of Dearborn & Hubbard. BEST PUNK ROCK BAR = EXIT 1315 W. North Ave.... ooops sorry....shameless self promotion.....

Slowpoke
12-23-2003, 08:02 PM
most of the time I agree with BigJoe, but I gotta say Portillo's is awefull. Every time I've eaten there the fries have been stale and the food has been marginal. Best hot Dog/Hamburger is at the Weiner's Circle in Lincoln Park - too far for someone staying downtown...... You can get a great burger at Food Life on the 2nd floor of Water Tower Place. I have never meet a human being on planet earth who has not found something they like at Food Life.

I defy you to try to be unsatisfied there.

Yes, the name Chop House sounds right.

The fun thing about the Hard Rock is when you get to sit outside and watch all the homeys pose and strut their stuff at the McD's across the road! ;)
Truly entertaining (and I've seen some QUITE original limosines at the drive-thru!).

Magnum's -- for the middle aged tourist who wants a great steak along with some eye candy.

That would be the one down the street from the Chop House, next to the dance club? Nice place to ... um... meet people. At least, it was back before I got married. ;)

And I ALWAYS have a good time at the Blue Chicago blues bar, at the one just south of the Hard Rock. Never fails that I have a ripping good time there (and I even got dragged up on stage once to horse around with the band, back in 2000 or 2001).

Slowpoke
12-23-2003, 08:13 PM
that would be The Rock & Roll McDonalds -- no other McDonalds around is quite like this place - always packed. The land that thing sits on is worth millions! worth a quick trip just to see how some franchisees took liberties to make themselves stand out from the crowd.

Also worth a quick visit is Navy Pier - 50 yards from my home. There's a food court there as well as touristy stores.

Also, jump on one of the free trolley's that serve the Michigan Avenue - State Street - Navy Pier - Museum Campus routes. I even cop a free ride home from the office on these things every so often. [Sarge - pardon the use of the word 'cop' here]

Had a full slab and the works just two weeks ago and can't wait to get back. Lip-smackin goood!! Its less than a mile and a half from the Knick, (about a $5.00 cab ride) on a quiet residential corner in the Lincoln Park area. (2 blocks north of North Ave. and 2 blocks west of Wells St.) And it's affordable. Aver. tab: $25.00 per person w/o drinks.

Enjoy your visit. Mac's a helluva host.

Slowpoke and I snatched them up at Midway, and toured a bit on the way to their hotel. Archer Avenue had its usual "color" on display, I believe they enjoyed the drive. We chuckled about a few "wings" on display around us, one reminded me that I have laundry waiting at home...

We also encountered a brave but over-zealous challenge from a bright yellow something of some sort, even Jefferson scratched his part number head. It was a confusing assembly of plastic, paint and polished aluminum. The driver was also confused, once he found himself slightly out of out of his league.

I am sure he is King of his block, but we got guests, and this Marauder S hasn't been through his area in a while. Guess he hasn't heard the Kenny Brown news, some people are born stupid, others learn it. He made his choice.

We didn't go heads up, I have three passengers to protect. But what he showed us inspired no more than a healthy chuckle from me and not much else. Judging by how long he had to study my Bob White Ruby Reds, I was surprised that he expected a return call.

If you're going to pilot your vrsion of a race car around your neighborhood, you need to have some anger management in the house, right? Driving up on my azz after you lose, isn't polite. Our in-car dialogue...

"What?"
"Again?"
"In Chinatown?"
"traffic?"
"You goofy?"
"Or delivering pizza for Connie's?"

Enough LOLs to allow this banana some right of way. We went on to take some pics while he steered to his right. Good choice Dude, and no problem. Later, I like chineese take out.

Tomorrow AM, I'm collecting Jefferson and Elizabeth, and heading to the MSI. We'll arrive by 11 AM, meet y'all by the front door. It's not too late for any of y'all to join us, I'll have my cell phone on for last minute coordination.

312.401.1396.

See y'all then, be safe.

BTW...Jefferson, Elizabeth and Mary are here to SEE Chicago. As long as the weather holds out, anyone got any ideas for Tuesday?

I've lived here all my life, nothing is special anymore. Y'all need to help me remember what it is they should see...Please?

Something about "best laid plans of mice and men..."

I have been out of touch for a couple days and got hooked "on call" for the city of Traer IA and their wireless network. Needless to say, I could not make this meet and really, really wanted to!

I've been working on their network more than my own and even got called at 11:30pm Christmas eve.

The up side is that it is good money!

Mary, so sorry I could not make it over today. I *promise* to make the next meet no matter what. (unless they offer me an insane amount to be on-call)

Hope everyone over there has a wonderful New Year!

Oh ywah, one more thing...

GO PACKERS!!!! WHOO HOO!!!

Jefferson called to say he was safely back in San Diego. Mary should be home soon too. Hopefully everyone had a great time here and encourage others to visit our fair city!

Well, my road trip has ended. What a great week!! A big THANKS to all the WCMs for such a warm welcome, sharing your table and your fair city. Mac, Poke and Lynn's Taxi Service didn't even overcharge. ;)

So nice to put names and faces to screen names. That's what this is all really about! Special thanks to my dear friends Mac and Lynn & Family for taking such good care of me! And another special thanks to Jefferson-Mo and Elizabeth-Mo for sharing their vacation with me too.

If you haven't figured it out by now, this car and this Board are about making new friends. I don't have enough fingers to count all the great friends I've made in the past year. While we have fun bantering on the Board, the real treat is shaking hands, saying howdy in person and even test-driving another car! And to some of you - you're stuck with me for life! You know who you are!!!! :D

Happy New Year!!

Bunny!!

ps: you've all been very busy posting while I've been away...lots to catch up on!

Well Cleveland may rock, but....in the words of old blue eyes:

Wish I could have made it, sounds like you all had a blast

just read in the paper that starting tomorrow [1-5-2004] the Submarine U-505 exhibit will be closed until Spring '05 for cleaning. Good that you got to visit it while it was still open!

We planned it that way! Some kind Member mentioned that while we were discussing our Sunday options! I didn't feel claustrophobic either. Got some good pics too.
