View Full Version : Trans Gone Bad

Ah, Sunday... The last day the car moved all day on it's own... Spent plenty of time on the highway but was hearing a strange noise, like a thin piece of plastic stuck in a small computer fan. Couldn't pinpoint what it was or where it was coming from. Heading to work Monday morning, though, that sucked ass. About five minutes from the office, and the engine revved high but the car barely moved. Eventually it just didn't move at all. On the plus side, I got to watch all the idiots try and figure out that hazard lights mean the car isn't going anywhere. Anywho, it's at the shop, and the trans is getting rebuilt. If I'm lucky it'll cost a bit under $1,500, if I'm not a bit under $1,700. In the meantime I get to drive a Chevy Cobalt for a rental. It really makes me appreciate my Marauder. It doesn't suck, but it's not nearly as great.

Have the rebuilders throw a J-mod on it while they're doing it...

Very long time in getting back to this post... Got it rebuilt, but shifting a little hard into second at lower thottle. As for changing the trans fluid, I doubt the previous owner ever changed it, and every single time I had the money together to do a fluid change it had to get spent on something else. I'm hoping to avoid such an issue in the future. And I was not able to get the J-mod done. I'll have to look into that in the near future.

It may already have the "J-Mod" if the 1-2 shift is hard!!
I did it to mine and it was ridiculously hard at light to moderate throttle....had to tame it down with the tune...........WOT it is still very hard but wheel spin makes it very smooooooth!!:burnout: :D

I had that whining noise coming back from MV-8. I had the fluid and filter changed and its been fine. When the trans was cool it would be fine, as soon as it warmed up it would slip and whine. So far after 500 miles and a track day, no problems.

I don't think that the j-mod was done... The extra firm shift started after putting in the 4:10 gear and getting the Zack tune. The hard shift is coming between 2 & 3 and only when the throttle is just right. Although I really enjoy the hard shifts into 2nd at WOT! It often breaks the rear tires loose even on warm, dry pavement.

He lessened time on the 1-2, 2-3 clutch fill time, upped the engagement curves, lessened shift slip, changed TQ reduction on shifts, changed TV pressures everywhere, time for shifts to complete, yada yada... ;)

The Old Mechanic saying, pay me now or pay me later.
(Do the maintenance now or pay me more later when your car is on the tow truck.)
Hopefully this trans will last longer.
