A damn mouse nest!!!
Big Thanks to Dave "ImpalaSlayer" for his help on removing my intake manifold so I could clean it and also installing my underdrive pulleys!
My engine has 151k miles on it, the lower intake manifold has never been removed, only the upper was propped up to slide in the intake spacer. To our surprise all the bolts came loose without any or almost any issues. Upper and lower intake manifolds cleaned up quite well with the help of some strong B52 Chem Clean Tool carb/choke cleaner and regular brake cleaner.

Yeah no kidding, I don't know what type of bird would crawl all in there just to make a nest. Well take that back I could see a sparrow doing it cause they will make nest anywhere.

Also found a Snap-On 13mm socket in the nest as well.

Headed to the track tomorrow. That's why I did the pulleys and cleaned the intake today. I'll report tomorrow what new times are.

It's amazing just how much oil is blown past the pcv system in these cars.
Ford should have addressed this issue with a better approach than a heated pcv inlet

Clean that Engine Chris!!!!! Good thing they didnt start chewing into the wires.
Dave we have 2 different ways of removing the intake. I pull the entire fuel rail with injectors installed out of the intake and fold it over. I also yank the alternator completely out. I still leave the crossover tubes in place and bend the tabs as well.
I guess it doesn't matter what road you use to get there as long as you get there. ;)
Looking forward to hearing the new times from my NA nemesis in the Silver Birch!

Mine was packed with firewall insulation inside the intake tunnel and between the manifold and block. The original owner must have stored it in a barn.

Mine had a few pieces of the exhaust heat shielding cloth in it.

LOL....Hey Chris!...I thought that a SBC was a 'mouse' motor...?
BTW: Where did all the B-52 that you sprayed on/in the lower intake go?

I sprayed it in, swished it around then dumped it out. At one point I had it standing up and was spraying into the bottom ports and it would shoot right back out like it was throwing up which was kinda funny (had to be there to see it).

I've noticed that the tolerances are tight enough that if you have a slight amount of grunge builup in the fuel injector holes in the intake, they are stubborn as all hell. Once cleaned (I had to use a toothbrush, cleaner and some emory cloth) and oiled, they pop right in and out.

OK, dumb question, how does a mouse get in there??

Your guess is as good as anyone elses. I think area must stay warm the longest after the engine has been turned off.

There's a big drain hole in the back web on the block.

there is a giant gap between the bottom of the intake and the block, you could put your hand under there

Yeah I noticed that after I pulled the nest out and ImpalaSlayer vacuumed up the rest. Could have squeezed themselves through it or around the injectors also.

I wonder what is in between the block and intake on my MM. It sat for about 2 years before I bought it.
