View Full Version : Replacing 7+ year old OEMs

I bought my car last January with the original set of OEM tires still on it along with about 40K miles of use. After close to a year of my driving, the front tires are really worn on the outside while the rear tires are still in really good shape.

This is where I'm having my problem. Like many of you, I found out how hard it is to get a hold of OEM replacements yesterday and then after reading a few threads on this forum, I found out just how bad OEMs really are compared to other aftermarket tires. So now I'm considering replacing all four even though only the front two really need it.

My question to you all is this: With this car being my daily driver and me, living in rural southern Indiana, I'd like to get a set that can be used in all weather or as close to that as I can get so what would you all recommend? Money is a bit of a concern this time of year, but I'm prepared to pay a little more for a good set of tires.

Thanks in advance.

The rear BFGs are still good a 40k miles?!!!

I was lucky to get 10k out of my rears, and no it wasn't because I would sit there and burn the tires.

+1 on the Toyos though

You read that right. As far as I know, the original owner never had them replaced and no records ever turned up for having them replaced- not that it necessarily means anything. Of course the guy was 85 and put less than 6K mi per year on the car.

Indeed, the date reads 2008 (I think). I suppose checking that out first would have made me sound like less of a moron :alone:. Looking like a new front and rear set of Toyos.

The numbers set in a square at the end of a sequence of numbers are the ones to look for. 2608 would mean they were produced in the 26th week of 2008.

I just bought new tires, here's the thread (http://mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=67447) and here is the website (http://www.fiercetires.com/tires/instinct-zr/index.html?dispSection=specs) about them. Supposedly a decent winter tire. I won't be driving my car in the winter so I can't speak to their performance, but they are quiet on the road, have a 30k treadlife warranty, and match the BFGs in all categories.
