View Full Version : Broken Coil Spring - Recommendations?

Hi guys,
Just took the car in for an alignment, and it turns out one of my coil springs is broken.
I found Moog and Raybestos springs on RockAuto.com for $85/pair.
Has anyone used these with success?
Another question, how easy are they to replace? Wondering if I could attempt it myself.
Thanks.

Some years ago, I replaced the springs on my Honda Accord with aftermarket. The front of the car was way higher than stock and looked like a really bad custom job done by a gang banger. It was so bad I got rid of the car shortly afterwards.

I replaced the springs on my MM and everything is perfect. I won't make the same mistake again.

LOL - No jumps! Can't figure out how you break a spring though. Seems bizarre to me.

You can do it yourself if you have a spring compressor and are VERY VERY careful.

I looked myself, and it's definitely broken.
They got a price of $140/spring though, which sounds shady. I think that may be for OEM springs?

I just called ford, 139.00 each, if u have a broken one you should replace both, I would personally stay with OEM because if you change it to aftermarkert the car will handle different and like in a previous post there is a good chance your ride height will be different. Plus oem quality is usually the best.

Thanks for checking that! I was going to call them myself to confirm, but you saved me the trouble! The shop did recommend that I change both, but it's always good to get some other opinions on it.
My simple alignment just got really expensive....:(

Sorry for my ignorance, but what is svtp.net? It comes up as a UK domain sale site.

On another note, I've noticed lately too, that if you go to any Ford dealer parts websites (including Tousley), our Marauders are not showing up on the parts pages any more. Are we out the 7 year support window now???

Or just find out which car dealership deals with a major car rental place, call that dealer's parts counter and say something like this " hello, its so and so from whereever and I need coils for this car, then tell him you will pay cash when u pick them up, probably save yourself 40 % but you didn't hear that from me.

Go with OEM springs. To save on labour, take the strut assembly out yourself (very easy) and have a shop replace the springs for dirt cheap and then reinstall the strut yourself.

They wear out just like almost everything. Think metal fatigue. The springs go up and down a bazillion times in 100k miles. Airplanes suffer from metal fatigue too. That's why they have mandatory retirement for airframes.

It's not limited to car make either. As I stated, I replaced mine in a Honda, SUPPOSEDLY superior to just about every manufacturer on the planet.

Not a bad idea. Maybe I'll come and pay you a visit at Ken Knapp.
I'm out of vacation now though. I feel a sick day coming on... :)

I bought a new 94 Cougar xr7... had this great car for 15 years & rolled 195 K miles. I had to change the front coils 5 times. I think it was from extremely cold temps. here in Canada. Try -40 F it kills metallurgy.

i thought our cars had the same front springs as crown vics with police package ?so those springs should be plentiful .

'03-'06.5 CVPI and Marauder have the same front spring rate, but the CVPI with a higher ride height. That rate would be 325 lbs/in

i cut and pasted this from an older post

All fixed up now.
Went with OEM springs and had the dealer install them. Getting too cold outside to do it myself.
Also went with the Carfixer alignment specs.
Thanks for all the advice guys.
