I know people can and will sell them below, at or above blue book value and it is worth what some one is willing to pay for it. My question is...is it customary for stealerships to price a car for sale way above BBV? Reference a 2003 MM with 16K on the clock.....BBV is around 14K and they have it priced at 19K. That is about 5K above BBV.

The factor here is the low mileage. Theyre pricing it at $19k wait a few months and im sure theyd take $16k. Dealerships NEED to move cars where as a private owner may stay firm on their price.

The dealership as well as a private buyer can ask anything they want. What they will sell it for directly relates to how soon they want to get rid of it.

Mike, at that mileage KBB for retail value is $12.5K. For Trade-in it's $8.8K and for private party sale it's $10.6K. That's in San Antonio with the car appraised in excellent condition @ 16K miles.

They are 6.5 K above book value, so unless there's added features or it's a seller's market they should be open to negotiation.

i think you said it best in your op "its worth what some one is willing to pay" that being said it also leaves plenty of room for negotiation!.....some one will buy it for less than asking price thinking they stole it!

I have been on the search for a couple of months and have not found a low mileage clean mm for less than 16k.

Carmax spent many years and a lot of money convincing everyone that they were the cheapest and easiest way to go, and there was some truth to that. Then, when everyone stopped questioning that fact, they slowly raised their prices to the point where they are way, way expensive. I almost got suckered into a deal to trade my wife's Explorer in for a 2008 Taurus. I said no, went home and did the numbers, and realized they stood to make 10k on the deal. Needless to say I did not go back. Do the research and know the numbers before you ever step foot into a dealership. And get your own financing. Finally, say no to any and all extras like environmental protection services, extended warranties and gap insurance programs. Get those later if you really want them. I used to be a car salesman, so I know........

Mine was on the lot with 40K miles and they wanted $16,000. KBB said it was worth $13,200, but I got it for $12,850. So in my experience, yes.

When I purchased my Marauder the Kelly Blue Book price was $21700. They were asking $23900.

I negotiated the price down since the front seat had a repair from a cigarette burn, the passenger side had paint touch-ups from door dings, the wheels had minor scrapes and abrasions on three of the four wheels, and the paint was worn off of the driver door threshold. The MM had 28,609 miles, April 23, 2005.

The price I negotiated down to became the KBB dealer listed price within a week.

So, what you pay for it will determine the value for all of the rest of us.

After driving my MM for these years, I now have 70700 miles on mine. I would pay $20000 for a MM with only 16,000 miles on it, if it was clean and no accidents.

At that price I'd expect to get a 3/36K Ford ESP warranty. Take it to any dealer in the country. You can only get an ESP if you get it from a dealer.

Mine came with one.
