View Full Version : A certain feeling

This has been going on for some time but doesn't seem to be getting any worse.

Everytime the drive train engages or disengages I feel a certain "thunk" if I could use that term. More of a feel than a sound. Happens at any speed, or any gear even with O/D off. Let off the accelerator or depress the accelerator and "thunK" comes up through the SOP.

It's like the drive train taking up the slack. Doesn't do it when speed is constant.

All the gears shift good, O/D works, fluid changed regularly at 25K, no leaks, no gear whine, can't tell if it's front or back of car.

Is there any troubleshooting I can do to narrow this down?

Thanks,

That sounds like a universal joint.

I have a similar feeling periodically, at least I think so from what you're describing. Sometimes if I'm coasting and I apply throttle again, not even a lot of throttle or abruptly, I get a jolt feeling in the car kind of like a sloppy quick clutch release.

With the car stationary, engine at curb idle, brakes on, shift from reverse to drive. Do you hear a thunk or metallic ping? If so, u-joint for sure. If no sound, may still be u-joint. Worth a try. Good luck.

Pat, although u-joints are the most likely cause, also check the transmission mount on the crossmember and the motor mounts...

That sounds like a universal joint.

Yep, too much play. That would be my first choice.
