Just bought my MM last week, noticed traffic passing me like crazy. Used this forum to identify my RPM while driving and raised the car up and counted the turns of the driveshaft with the wheel, I have 4.10 gears, buth the Speedometer has not been corrected. I'm not sure if a tune is on the car, but since the speedo wasn't corrected I doubt it. Everything else appears to be stock, air cleaner/filter/injectors. Just wondering what the best route would be to make good use of those gears?

I would recommend going faster. I hope this helps.

As I now do, not quite the insight i was seeking. I know I need a tune, looking for my best option, as well as other upgrades that I should do.

The tune and gears are the best mods to start, unless you got a ton-o- money.
You could do underdrives and a open element filter , or exhaust but again more money per return.

I was considering putting UDP's on with a tune, maybe a CIA, but leaving the exhaust for now, maybe deleting the rear cats. I'm not exactly close to a good tune shop that I know of, whats the best out of the box option?

For a tune u could give Lidio a call he's a vendor here alternative automotive or Dennis Reinhart he's also a vendor here. I personally have Lidios tune and I love it. It feels like a whole different car. But I have also heard that Dennis has a very good tune also.

I carry the new SCT SF 3 tuner, even with the the basic SCT tunes it will wake the car up. You can also with those base tunes adjust shift firmness and axle ratio your self. Free ground shipping and MM.net members get 10% off with coupon code SCT. It's in the 2005- Present Mustang * Performance * SCT tuners & packs

That shift schedule has to be off for the trans if the pcm is stock and you have 4.10s. Get a tune to start and you'll be at a whole new level.

Definitely go for a tune if you have 4.10's in there, I drove to my tuner's shop after doing 4.10's for a custom tune and it felt way off when it shifted on the way. Just get a tuner from one of the vendors here and you'll be set. The shift schedule and shift firmness are more than worth it, the extra bit of power you'll gain is just icing on the cake.

Has anyone done the J-Mod or is the upgrade from tuning enough?

I love love LOVE my tune (and Tuner!), and still plan to do the j-mod, I heard the combo is outstanding.

What did you get for a tuner? Im thinking about getting the SCT XCAL-3 with Lidio's tune on it.

xCal with either a Lidio or Reinhart tune, FTW!
You can follow up at a later date with a dyno tune.

Dennis Reinhart has some great tunes for our cars now. I had Lidios, Z*cks, DR's is more agressive than Lidios. Just like I like it. Z*ck's is good, but, I am a supporter of the shops that do this as a business and DR's is just as good. I did the Jmod recently and I love the tune/mod combo. I have 360+ @ the crank na and the tires will break loose all the way through to halfway through 2nd no prob.

You're still a little wet behind the ears and weren't here when things were "questionable" about DR tuning. That's for another time and thread.
Wait until you get a high stall converter, you'll be glad you did the J-mod cause without it the shifts are very very soft even with trans line pressure turned up in the tune.
To the OP, the choice is yours of who you go to. Either one will put a big grin on your face.

I know the history. I'm telling how it is right now. I have used and manipulated a lot of tunes. As of right now, DR has been trying. He's extremely quick to respond and be helpful anytime through email or phone. His tune today hands down blows Lidio's away. IF you like an agressive tune. I'm building my own custom tune right now and am incorporating some of his and other's tweaks/ideas as well as my own.

Reminds me, last night after class I was headed home and was enjoying some light to light hijinx with 2 guys from my class. They've repaved the main drag around here, GREAT for sound effects. Forgot just how hard mine shifts when you really lay into it. Squalled away from one light, barked the backs on shift and bounced my head off the headrest, lmao! I love this 2 ton beast of a vehicle.

Have you verified your speed with a GPS yet? That would be my first step. The original owner might have sucked the tune out and kept the tuner for his next car or tried to make a little more money off the sale. Regaurdless, atleast you know what gear you have, now you need to get the shifting and speedo corrected. That is a very simple task through any vendor that KNOWS Marauders. They are not Mustangs and that is what any vender outside of hrer will sell you. Not that that is a bad thing, as it will work just fine, but to get it spot on, stick with people in know and who have many 1000's of hours perfecting it. I would also try to deal with whomever may be geographically closer to you as this makes a difference in air quality, but not exactly a huge deal in a mostly stock vehicle.
Since the car is new to you and you don't know the history of maintanance, fluids should be the first on your list of "to do's" This would be an excellent time to make up your mind on a jmod. Simply turning pressure up in a tune for a harsh shift is not highly recommended by trans shops, but once again, you are mostly stock, so not a very big deal, but the jmod was designed by the very guy you designed or helped design?? our transmission. With that info known, it is a clear cut good way of doing things in my personal opinion and costs $3.00 in gaskets and 4 extra quarts of oil over a normal trans fluid change. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Thanks Bob. I was asking mainly because I was planning to change the tranny fluid and filter and while I was in there do the J mod, but I wanted opinions on it before I tore into it. I already changed all the other fluids out, first night I had it. I checked the back of the PCM to see if it has a chip, it doesn't. My guess is it doesn't have a tune because the speedo if off and it shifts are messed up. I did verrify the speed with gps and my local PD's radar gun.
Now on the J mod Ive been reading alot on it, I've read that some people leave the spring in on the 1-2 shift accumulator spring in place because the shift was too hard. Is that the case or would I be happier with it out like you do in the J mod?

Take all the acumulator springs out then adjust the line pressure with the tuner, like that if you ever put a torque converter you don't have to do it.

^^Take this advice and run with it. I had your same concerns but Zack told me to quit thinking into and take them out. He was right, I took them all out, AND raised my pressure to max and still find it too be WAY to soft at WOT, but perfect in everyway normal driving. Even my wife agrees if that helps.

I guess I can take it out and if I think its too harsh I can always put it back in. Thanks for all the help and input. Now I just have to choose my tune lol
