I had my car taken to shop here in St. Louis. The rear end was rebuild with all new ford parts new posi, 4.10's, seals...
I was called and told the tranny was the issue. They did the job for the cost of parts so im not too upset about that.
I need a tranny rebuild, I am told the cause of my problems is the planetary gear. I have a qoute for 1300 for a full rebuild.
What are people's thoughts on this?
the tranny has had the J-Mod btw

I don't think that's too bad for a rebuild, I think mine was $2100 if I remember correctly. Although I haven't heard of that problem very often with these transmissions. My issue arose because my stub shaft sheared itself and exploded into a million pieces.

If they replace the planet you should make sure to have them upgrade you to the gearset from an 04. That one has hardened pinions and is a definite upgrade. The price you were quoted is cheap. Spend the extra it takes and take advantage of this opportunity to move to a superior part for not that much extra $$$
Also, don't let anyone tell you that the newer gearset will cause any issue of any sort at all with anything whatsoever. Nothing changed other than the part got better in 04. It's a direct swap that requires exactly nothing else at all. Same labor, same everything else except for the upgraded part.

So after the rear rebuild it still doesn't drive ok?
What is the car doing that does not seem normal?
Exactly what the shop is saying that is wrong with the planetary gears besides the fact that all automatic trans have them?
Most of times when the 4r70 trans fail, it's the usual suspect like clutches, bands, sprags, input shaft, bushings, tail housing. Rarely planetary gears. Not saying it can't happen. I'm pushing 600+ rwhp through my original planetary gear set with over 85K and no problems. It just sounds suspicious.

Got the car back on Friday. It drives excellent now.
What made me get the car towed in was when I pulled into my driveway I felt something clunk really hard and then when it was parked it locked up. If i put it in F R N 1 2 it felt like something was locked up and the car wouldn't move.
I saw the planetaries when I picked it up and they were trashed. From what I could see the gears on the outside of the assembly were mangled.
I am very weary with going open throttle for a long time since I just spent all this money on the rebuilt tranny and rear end. Could the failure be part to blame on a bad tune?
I believe there is some play in my U joints so that's next on the list.

What gear is "F"? haha
I'm having a hard time trying to picture the gears on the outside. Do you have any pictures of them and also the trashed planetaries?

No picks sorry, F = forward - drive.
This isn't my picture but I think these are the same planetary gears. Where the guys finger is was were the visible damage was. The mechanic threw them away.

I had a tune from a place here in St. Charles Mo called pur performance. Once it was repaired I put back on the DR tune I have.
