Anyone try to fit one of these into the space where the stock cooler goes? I got the idea from the lightning guys. http://www.timskelton.com/lightning/race_prep/powertrain/filter_cooler_install.htm

I ordered one and will try to fit it in while I do a transmission swap in the next few weeks. I broke a stub shaft and may as well replace the cooler with an upgrade instead of either cleaning out the stocker or finding another stocker. I would like to know if anyone tried it before and if there's any tricks/pointers to doing it.

Hella-nice write-up! I can't say I have ever seen an external trans fluid filter.

I bought this one http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Tru-Cool-MAX-transmission-cooler-47391-/230499399007?pt=Motors_Car_Tru ck_Parts_Accessories and added it inline with the stock trans cooler.

Nice! I would love to do this even though I only drive my car on the streets and mainly baby it. I know, I know, I'm a wuss!!! Maybe I should get on it every now and then just for giggles and grins

Here is how I did mine. http://www.mercurymarauder.net/forums/showthread.php?t=62092

You should run the new one with a thermal bypass IMHO.

Nice article above. Are you adding a spin on filter to yours?

You only need one with a thermal bypass if you remove the stock fluid cooler out of the loop. If you add in an aftermarket cooler on top of the stock one then the new one doesn't need to have a thermal bypass.

Depends on how you plumb it. I have (2) - factory and the Long bypass.
If the stock cooler is doing it's job well enough (fluid less than 180) then return to pan. If you add in secondary after stock cooler and there isn't a thermal-bypass the fluid will run through the second cooler unnecessarily.

180 is the best temperature for ATF and having a 2nd thermal bypass better regulates the ATF to keep at an ideal temperature.

I managed to fit the Superduty cooler in the same location as the stocker, it's a tight fit as it's probably twice as thick as the stock unit. I added a thermal bypass, the same one as yours, babbage, just went to a transmission shop and they had it on the shelf. I didn't add an inline flter, couldn't really find a good spot to mount one either that wasn't right in front of the rad.

The only drawback of removing the stock trans cooler was it also contained the power steering cooler. It's bypassed for now, but I have a small B&M cooler that will go in it's place.
