I love to detail my MM.I was vacuuming my MM for the first time and discovered a real sloppy fit behind the center console on the passenger side. There is about a three inch gap between the carpeting and the center hump.I really didn't expect to find this kind of "stuff"on the MM.And I really don't want to let some dealer porter to be messing with it?It look's like the factory didnt center the carpeting?Anyone else have this problem?THANKS

I'd better go check my MM in the garage and get back to you on this!

guess what! There is a cut out on the passanger's floor side up under the dash on the consol side and there is a elect.connector of some sort just hanging there--what the heck is it and wonder why such a large cut out for something so small...anyone know?

For idiots who throw the carpets in to make the process easier. The carpet is probably the same generic carpet for the CV/GM too, so to keep cost down, if there are any other wires that run through there on those cars, it's there for them. My only complaint with the carpet is there's a bend at teh center hump in the back that won't lay down. It's starting to lay down now though, just need to keep that backseat loaded with the women! :D

Oh yeah --the women--no problem in getting the stares/looks from them too....the MM does it's own "Hi I"m as good as I look-care to step in for a look see"....

Yeah, I saw the electrical connector too. But,why is that cutout so large?Should have been tucked or cut to fit better than that!I wonder if all CV GM&MM with center consoles have that sloppy fit?

My carpet is a bit sloppy near the front tranny hump and in the rear behind the console. Seems like the carpet is not a real carpet but some type cardboard with carpeting over it. This must be the approach to keep costs down..... just throw it in the car.
The carpeting on the LSC is much better.....

No problems with the carpet in the one I bought. But I did notice that the MM at the first dealer I tried to buy from had a problem at the trans hump. It was up front, nearly under the dash: there was a good half inch wide by 2 inch long gap. They would have had to fix it before I took delivery.
Interestingly, my wife's old Windstar had a problem with the carpet not fitting around the console. Guess they just don't make 'em like they used too.

Glad to see someone else noticed this, When I take mine in for service Monday I will be looking at the other three he has on the lot to see how big a gap is in those cars. I can't believe they need the gap that big!

What did you hear about the '04

Using carry over parts from other programs does cut costs for the manufacturer, which inturn cut costs to the customer. Be careful with those connectors in front of the floor console. One (big connector) controls your floor shifter electrical and the other is your air bag mod (this sits on the tranny hump). You don't want to mess with them.

I think he's referring to the tranny improvements and SC of the '04...

Picked up my car tonight and now am waiting for an answer from Ford? Was told they contacted the Merc hot line and are still waiting for an answer? It wasn't as easy as the service writer orginally thought. He said they usually hear back from the hot line within an hour?My service writer trying to find out if they are going to have to order a new piece of carpeting?I'll post info when I find out what ford will do?

Hey... mine is like that too. I didn't think much of it, just thought it was a little wierd, till I saw yours.
Here is a TSB on loose and peeling carpet. Doesn't seem to be the same thing though. This TSB is on the door panel carpet.

Isn't there supposed to be a carpeted cover between the bottom of the dash and top of the hump there?
OK this isn't of a Marauder, but take a look at the pics in these links. there is a carpeted cover over that space in this CV. It's of the driver side but should be one on the other side too

Now you guys have me bummed! My MM has that ugly cut out on the passenger side as well. I feel like a putz because I didn't even notice!
One of the MMs I test drove had a noticeable gap on the driver's side and I thought that (or similar) was what y'all were talking about at first.
I don't see what can be done about it short of replacing the carpet with some that "fits"...

OK, now that we all see it, why can't mercury have a cover for the passenger side that is similar to the one on the driver's?

Voiced my complaint today with L/M Hot Line! Told them a picture is worth a 1000 words, and that they should look up this thread if they want to see what I'm talking about?I've had my car since 6/17 and I just found it two weeks ago? They seem as not to know anything about the situation? The only other MM at the dealer was the same way.Its a minor flaw but one I can't believe they did'nt encounter with the Sport CV or the 02 GM with bucket seats?

Mine too...shoot! Now what, see what fix LM offers?
Thanks for the links, RC, and I found that same panel on my driver's side too. Maybe we're just missing a carpeted access panel here?

Hello Everyone,
I just looked at my 200 Vic. Because I don't have a console Ford put a molded piece of carpet that is right under the ash tray and goes down to the tranny hump which covers the carpet cutouts that you are seeing. Also on the right side I have a power point outlet which helps to cover it up. If I can get my hands on a digital camera and get the pics downloaded to my puter, I will certainly post them for you to see.

I have the same cut-out on my carpet near the passenger side of the transmission hump. Pretty sloppy and careless for a $30,000 car. I guess Quality is not Job #1...................

Ask if they can provide another piece that's used on the left side to place on the right to cover that up

I was vacuming my car over the weekend and noticed the real crappy fit of the carpet in the front on the passenger side next to the transmission hump. Must be 2-3 inches of slop in there, pissed me off since my car is real low mileage and I know its not wear/tear. I also noticed the cutout as described before. Im going to try to fix it myself first but if that doesnt work I see my first service call coming up (and will make em fix the buzzing subwoofer too!)

My carpet was just replaced, after 13000 miles, due to premature wear beside the accelerator on the hump where my foot rests. :( The new carpet still has the large cut out area on the passenger side of the hump just like the original carpet had. I guess that is just the way Ford does things. Now if I can just figure out how to keep from wearing out the new carpet in the same place in the next 13000 miles........

Want to know how to fix that? Do It Yourself !
I had the dealer order me the new sub and I put it in. Four nuts, one connector, four screws and disconnect/connect two wires for the speaker. Easy to do.
I bought a sheet of 1" foam from the fabric store and packed it anywhere I thought there could be a 'rattle & hum' No more issues. If you need more info. let me know...
...Now if I can just figure out how to keep from wearing out the new carpet in the same place in the next 13000 miles........
Stop wearing high heels when you drive. :D
Seriously though, Ford uses the cheapest carpet that meets the minimum specs for abrasion, tear resistance, pile adhesion, etc.... and in some cases they accept carpets that don't meet the minimum abrasion spec (Focus)... did I just say that... oops.
And don't fool yourself into thinking that the replacement carpet will perform any better. It won't. You should consider yourself lucky if it performs as well as what came in the car.
I'm working on the carpet for the 2007 Navigator/Expedition right now. Through 2006, the Navigator has better carpet than the Expedition... not in 2007 - they all get the same crap. All Navigator service parts for vehicles 2006 and older will get the new crap as well...
Yea, it's a very cheap grade of carpet in the MM. Your best bet is to get a set of good floor mats or to put a piece of junk carpet on the side of the tunnel where you place your foot to keep it from wearing through.
