View Full Version : Cold heat with UDP??
I have UDP installed for about two months and I notice that when I come to a stop at idle my heat start to get cooler. When I start driving again it heats up. So is this a UDP trade-off or is this a sign I need to change water pump or thermostat? I increase my drive idle with the hand held to 850rpm.

I had U/D pulleys on The Blackbird (before the Trilogy) and I have them now on Phoebe and if there were any heat issues, the Bunny-lady would have been on my case. Plus, I've never heard of U/Ds causing any lack of heat, so I'd say you have something else going on.

Burp the system. I have this happen EVERY year and I burp the coolant system and it goes back to normal. Most likely has nothing to do with your pulleys. My marauder is bone stock and does this every year.

X2 on that.
Not any U/D pulley problem.
You're getting more heat when you start moving simply because your pushing air through from the outside vent. You've got a air-pocket; or something in the system, not allowing the coolant to flow right through the heater box undr the dash.
If it were an issue with the waterpump because of the pulleys, you'd probably be more likely to overheat the engine, then just have a heater issue.

What they said. The coolant flows proportionally to the water pump speed which is loest at idle. If you have an air pocket, more turbulence can break up the pocket into smaller bubbles and allow coolant to flow. When the coolant slows, the bubbles congregate into a pocket of air not allowing flow through heater coils. Burp it!!!

I assume you also changed the water pump pulley and not just the crank pulley?

I've only had mine on for a few weeks and the heat worked just fine during the time I drove it.
Thanks guys for the help I will burp the system. Yes I did use the underdrive water pump pulley.
Is it best to raise the front of the car when bumping the system or just make sure it is on level grounds?

The car has taller back tires from the factory. On level ground, your car will still be in a nose-down attitude.

Yes,
Park it nose up on an incline or run her up on ramps.
That way the crossover tube's fill port is the highest point on the engine.

I had my U/D's on for over 4 years and never had a heat problem.

Can you tell a performance diff. with them? Would you do it again?

make sure your coolant level is good before you do anything.

I personally haven't done it on the Marauder; but on my 5.0L I changed all three pulleys.
Yes you can feel the difference!
My alternator charge went down, and the cooling system must be in top shape (only because the coolant flows slower); so there are trade-offs. Makes it abit tough on a daily drive into city traffic in the middle of summer.
Final answer: they work.
Now about the "burping".
I know the cross-over has the port that comes off; and that's the place to "burp" it; but if the engine runs warm enough to open the thermostat and allow the coolant to flow through to the cross-over - isn't it going to just shooting out the plug at some insane temperature?

Before starting the fill procedure below, make sure that your overflow tank is filled to the correct "COLD" level with coolant.
1: Open the crossover fill port when the engine is cold.
2: Fill it to the top, then start the engine to see if it "draws down" any coolant.
3: If it doesn't, put the plug back in. and proceed to step #5
4: If it does draw down the coolant level from the top of the crossover tube fill port, top it off again and put the plug back in.
5: Let it idle or drive it until it completely warms up with the HVAC on high Heat.
6: Shut it off, let it cool down.
7: Check the coolant level in the fill port and top off one more time....if necessary.

Thanks Joe.
(I'm printing it for my records as I type.)
Did the burp and it seems to worked. Thanks everyone.

Call me an idiot but what's a burp? I too have cooler heat at idle. Is it just the fill procedure?

"Burping" any trapped air from the coolant crossover tube fill port and topping off the fill port with coolant.

Hey fellas, first time posting. My 03 had the water pump take a poop, right before i noticed the coolant leak from the water pump, the heat started fading and then coming back and working normal. I took it to the ford dealer, they replaced the water pump, and the coolant tube. Is this related do you think,or is it something to do with the heater core, blend door, thermostat etc????? any help would be apprec.!!:stupid:

If there is coolant leaking from the water pump the seal(s) is shot and you need a new water pump.
I assume they replaced the coolant tube because they couldn't get the plug out.
Is the heat working now?

Hi, sorry, shouldv'e prob been more clear on my question. At about the same time i noticed my heater issues, my water pump took a dump, since i have warranty on it, i took it to ford, they replaced the coolant crosstube and water pump. Since i picked it up from the dealer the heater only seems to be pushing out warm air when driving/accelerating, when at a stoplight/or vehicle is in park, i get cold air from the defroster/vents intermittenly. Would this be something with the auto climate control, or is there maybe air left in the system??

Sounds liek air in the system, do you know how to check/burp it? Or, since they just fixed it, you could take it back.

Mine was doing the same as yours......you need to burp the system or take it back and tell the dealer what is going on. Mine is fine now.
