View Full Version : 16" Winter Tire question

I know our tires usually need to be run at around 38 psi or in that range. Should I run my 215/65 R16 tires at 38 psi, or can I run them at the pressure on the door jamb?

Thanks!

I vote for the jamb :P

Run them at psi on tire itself. That way if you happen to have 5 people in car its within range.?

door jam for aftermarket 16" tires?? No way jose..

That number is the max PSI for said tire.

Right, which is what you want

I do the 32 to 35 psi range and you get a nicer ride and good wear on my winter 16 inch set-up .

I run mine at 32. No reason specifically.
Just seemed like a pretty standard pressure to use.

It depends on what exact tires you are running the specs on the door are for a car with a full load wearing 44psi load index 97 front and 103 rear tires. The recommended 16" tires at tirerack are 44psi tires but load range 98/102 or 98/101. So I'd say that is close enough to run it at the stock pressure maybe -/+ 1-2psi. Of course they say you should never fit a tire with a lower load index but in the case of our cars the rear tires are way over capacity from the factory. The 103's are rated for 1929lbs each the 101's at 1819lbs ea is still more than needed to hold up the back of our cars unless of course your additional traction enhancer is literally about a 1/2 ton of sand in your trunk.

I ran mine at 35PSI with no problems. You could always bump them up if you are carrying a heavy load or for a long distance highway run. If you run them hard they will not grip as well on the snow/ice.

Well I mounted them and put them at 35 until I checked this thread. Looks like 35 might be ok. Might back them down to 32-33. Will have to monitor them!

I don't have a pic, but can get one on lunch. Pic below of the 2007 MGM wheels (google image) that I use and then I have Blizzak WS60's on the front and Blizzak WS70's on the back (had to buy two new ones this month). Tire size is 215/65 R16

Sweet. It started snowing at 6 a.m. here, there's enough to have a decent snowball fight now, woo hoo!

Only had a dusting the other night so far. I find it funny that you have had more snow than us up here in new england! I have only seen it snow that one night that we got the dusting. I was going to wait even longer to put the snowies on, but they have salted and sanded, so I took the nice wheels off and put the dumpers on. I like the ride though! A lot more smoother than the 18's!

I just inflate mine to what is printed on the tire. I have to put my winters on as of last week. I have been too lazy and on top of that. My jack quit working when I did try to put my winters on last Thursday. So now I am looking for a new jack.

Really? I would have guessed the opposite. Smaller tire, less cushion, that whole concept.
As far as us getting snow, we are basically an island here, water all around. I could throw a rock and hit ocean so maybe that has something to do with it. But i'm no weatherolocoligist.

"Really? I would have guessed the opposite. Smaller tire, less cushion, that whole concept."

The 16's have a taller sidewall and are a softer rubber, so it is a smoother ride. The 18's are a harder rubber and have a thinner sidewall so it is rougher.

My scissor jack works fine. I need a new floor jack. I think I am going to order an Arcan Quick Lift Service Jack 3 1/2 ton.

Stick with 35 psi. Also remember that if you drive a lot especially around highway speeds, the more you drive the tire will warm up and can increase in 2-3 psi.

I run mine at 35 psi cold. Winterforce M+S 235/70-16(front) & 255/70-16(rear). Been using this setup for 3-4 years and has worked fine at 35 psi. Even with having "snow tires" on you still need to drive with caution, give more time/distance to brake and not push the car as you would when it had all-season/summer tires on.

I will leave it at 35 for the time being. I have been driving this car in the snow for 3 years. It is a tank in the snow. I seem to have been getting the center wear issue even on my snowies. I will keep at 35 and see what happens.

I have about 40-50k miles on mine, I couldn't even tell you if there is any wear on them and I do about 80% dry highway. Tread still looks like it does the day I bought them.

Really? I have gone through 3 SETS of tires! I like my burnouts.... Not anymore though. Time to start treating her good. She has a few miles on her and I don't want to keep buying tires! haha

Mine usually go on in November and stay on until March. I followed suit with the oversized tires as Dragcity went with since in MD we don't get that much snow so there is a lot of dry weather and I don't feel comfortable on the 215/60 & 225/70 sized tires that others use. Too much weight of a car for such a thin tire IMHO.

Alot depends on how much snow the tires actually see. More snow = more spinning - more tread wear on the rears. Here in the hills rears only last two seasons, even studded may only go three seasons at best. Fact of life.

This is true. I see quite a bit here in New England (not quite yet this season) and there is definitely quite a bit of "trying" to get traction throughout the season.

Tom, your setup looks like the one I have for Phoebe. She came with 17" Lincoln rims that look almost exactly like yours. And I agree with you about the ride being better.
