Hi all -

Happy Holidays!

I've been wanting to ask the forum this question:

Are there any issues with driving with O/D off?

I like to keep the O/D off up to ~60MPH/2500RPM as the car sounds better and accelerates better (40-60).

I know that gas mileage suffers as a result but I didn't buy it for mileage - It ain't no PRIUS!

Thanks,

Mark

Alot of us drive that way.

You should have no problems.

Been driving that way since 2004.

You should always have it off while stomping on it anyway...

I thought that if we shifted at WOT with the o/d off we would have tranny problems.

It's the other way around, the OD band is rather weak so leaving O/D on when romping on it can hurt it. Prob less of an issue with N/A cars, but why take the chance.

Correct.

O/D off before standing on the :burnout: pedal.

Okay, so romping on it is when you hit it hard enough to make it downshift, right?

And if I'm on the freeway and want to nail it, is it okay to push the od off button at 60-70 and then get on it?

Thanks for the advice.

3rd gear doesn't end till the 120s, so yes if you are on the freeway it's fine to hit OD off then get on it.

if you have a tune i guess. "tuneless" i couldnt go pass 120mph it also depends on tire size and how far you wanna take it once the speed limiter is eliminated, mine goes to 132mph at around 6300 rpms

That's with OD off correct? How would you engage overdrive at that point to go faster? Would clicking the button to OD on right then be frowned upon?

HaHaHa, I don't have to worry about OD on/off any more... 4-2 downshifts, no problem...

I never really go wot on o/d, but if I I do I let off press o/d on and get back on the throttle. After that is endless, I have gone to 155mph with more to go.

I saw a press release that at PRI a company announced a new offering for the powerglide, a locking converter.

I don't think we will overpower it, rated for 3000 hp!

To sum up the correct info above:

Driving around town with O/D off is fine.
Always turn O/D off when going WOT. If you forget once in a while you won't blow anything up, but don't make a habit of it.

I have the T/C unlock at half throttle in my tune.....it always unlocks before a 4/3 or 4/2 downshift!!:bows:

It's easy to do and you will never have "downshift with T/C locked" problems this way!!:shake:

What about switching gears at WOT with the o/d button off ?

What about switching gears at WOT with the o/d button off ?

I've done it on the track and on the street a few times. It made no difference in my ET or performance so its not worth it.

Here is an option that may be better than TH400 with gear vendors. It can handle up to 850 horsepower with 6 forward gears and it will bolt up to Ford 4.6L

Here's what you get:

Six forward gears & fully programmable automatic or manual shifting for improved acceleration & fuel economy at cruising speeds
TCI® EZ-TCU™ transmission control unit & 4-speed automatic shifter (ratchet, gate or stock) needed for standard automatic operation
Full manual shifting with the 6x Six-Speed requires the included TCI® Paddle Shifter or optional Outlaw™ 2-Button Shifter
Self-contained design eliminates clearance problems of external bolt-on overdrives
Package includes transmission with bellhousing, flexplate, EZ-TCU™ transmission control unit, TCI® Paddle Shifter, wiring harness, transmission cooler, dipstick & Max Shift™ Street Performance Transmission Fluid

That is one nice setup, a little on the expensive side. I bet the driveability would be even better than our factory trans. I hope this trans that i have now last long. Thanks for the link.

Some of the 03-04 Cobra guys are spending about the same amount just to put a 4R70W in. Imagine that and it doesn't have 6 forward gears or paddle shift capability and not to mention can't handle 850 horsepower with WOT upshift on every gears.

FordNut
12-12-2010, 08:02 PM
I spent close to that on the 4R100. But it can handle well over 850 hp.

OD stays off till I'm going to cruise at 45 for more than a mile. Thats about it. I leave it off during spirited driving but if I'm on the freeway and need to pass an asshat I just nail it to the firewall. Never gave me a prob on either of the 2 MM's I've owned.
