ARGH

So I went to install them today. I bought these about a year ago, used off a member here on the site. Got three pulleys in the deal. Realized that I only needed to change the water pulley and the crank. I can't change the alternator one. No biggie.

The water pump pulley, EASY!

The crank, pulling off was easy. I used the long bolt to get into position, then used the original bolt.

The pulleys were lined up, started the car and heard a bad noise. The crank pulley was eating my timing cover!:argue::mad2:

Need the car running so put the stock back in ...

What did I do wrong? My mechanic tried and had the same issue as well ...

Not sure if I am more irrated that I did something wrong or the fact that I damaged the timing cover. :bigcry:

I didn't have any problems with the underdrives on my MM for over 50K....

You either have the wrong pulley or it's installed too far on the crankshaft.

Make sure you put the water pump pulley of the right way.

Remember to add silicone sealer to the keyway on the crank pulley.

The crank snout should be flush with the keyway. You may have pushed it in too far or the outer ring of the pulley shifted. Hows the rubber along the inside of the dampner? its possible that it was dropped during shipping and moved the outer ring. After my engine build I had the same exact thing happen. Either the shop that did my engine dropped the pulley or the fact that the rubber in my dampner was chewed away that caused the outer ring to move towards the front cover. I cut away some of the pulley surface on a brake lave to make it work. I replaced the pulley with a new one and didn't have a issue afterwards.

Way back when....someone was selling Mustang Cobra (N/A models) underdrive pulleys for use on the Marauder.
I'm not sure if, in fact, both cars have the same pulley "offset" and the same front covers...:dunno:
Are there model numbers on the UDPs that you attempted to install?

I Will have to go and check the model numbers. After I failed, intransported her to my mechanic. He attempted with the same results. I though I had screwed something up. Luckily he did not charge me too much for my verification. He was doing other things as well (leaky pinion seal and differential, brake flush).

Everything else was a came walk. It now sports steel braided lines, cut front coils, addco's, ... Good days work.

I installed mach 1 pulleys that Dave sold me about a year and a 1/2, no problem there I would get another brand new crank pulley or make sure that one is aligned.

Way back in the day, there used to be 2 kinds of pulleys. The Steeda style and the 2-piece style. The 2-piece style contributed to several engine failures, so make sure you have the good ones.
