 I've noticed since the weather got really cold here on the East Coast that every now and then I suddenly get what sounds like a chirping or cricket noise under the hood. It has no pattern. I can drive 10 miles, 50 miles or a hundred miles and all of a sudden this noise starts and goes away after about 5 to 10 minutes and may not come back again for a couple days or sometimes can happen a few days ina row. I notice if I take my foot off the accelaerator it stops. Is this a bad or loose belt or the alternator or what ? I replaced the belt about two years ago for what its worth but have the origianl alternator. Car has 148 K on it.

+1.

Drove me nuts. You can open and slam the door to replicate the noise.

Could be tensioner or pulley bearings too...
