What is the best way to check for a worn ball joint ?

A pry bar to see if there is any play (movement when force applied to each component) between the links.

I replaced mine because the boots disintegrated but at 110k they had a little play in them too.

I had mine replaced because of torn and rotted boots.

i have 130,000 on mine and they barley have any play. my boots seem fine at a glance, will inspect them more when i get home

Jack up the car just enough to get a 2x4 or prybar under the tire and pull up on it. If there's movement in the ball joint, it's bad.

If you hear noise from front end when backing out of the drive way.
