Greetings all. I've searched here and came up with nada. So, my problem is a ticking/knocking at 1500 to 3500 rpms usually under torque load. I have a JLT CAI and a BOC mild tune by my friend Lonnie. I'm unsure what it could be and any suggestions are welcome. Thank you so much! Sincerely, -j

Thats pinging or detonation. Your tune is off or you have a tank of bad gas or a lower octane in the tank.

I'm pretty sure the octane is good. I could very well be the tune.

possible but unlikely (Lonnie knows what hes doing) - is it a 93 tune? Are you running 93 gas?
Return to stock and see if it's still there.

Yep, running 93. If I have a chance, I'll put it back to stock and check. Thanks!

I agree sounds like detonation from a bad tune. Remedy quick before she goes boom!

hmm what would cause his tune to turn itself off?

What is pretty neat about this, I, just for kicks, added a couple of bottles of "octane boost", one per tank of 93 octane, and the ticking/knocking is gone! Interesting.
Would a higher t-stat (180+ degrees) cause a tick/knock under torque load? I seemed to remember reading that somewhere.

You mean a lower thermostat?
The Marauder's original thermostat was 191 or 192.
We usually switch top a colder thermostat (180) and a colder heat range for the spark plugs so we can add more timing.

Well, that makes since. If more timing was added in the new tune, I guess I should go with a 180 t-stat? I love learning this stuff! Thanks everyone!!!

No a thermostat wont do, the TUNE NEEDS TO BE REDONE!!! Stay away from octane boost it will foul your O2 sensors.

Pulled out 2 degrees of spark/timing. Went on a 4 hour road trip. Didn't hear anything. I will keep monitoring. Thanks everyone!

You have to be careful with some of these gas stations (especially with my set up). Just because you're paying for 93 octane, it doesn't mean you're getting it. It could be big name or noname stations. If it's a regular station that you visit all the time and you suspect substandard octane, you can report it to your state's Division of Consumer Affairs and they'll probably get a visit.
Hopefully then it will keep them honest
Here's an example of what the task force found in NJ.

The Marauder's original thermostat was 191 or 192.Actually Jim, the stock thermostat is 188°. I still have it in my box-o-parts that have been upgraded over the years.

MM BKK. Thanks a bunch for that info! I use the same gas station, primarily, and for the most part, haven't seen any change or difference, but my wife swears that her car coughs and hesitates when she uses that fuel. I'm going to send in a "check this station" request to our Weights and Measures authorities. Probably nothing will happen but I do have a concern now. Thanks everyone!!!!
