Dang, that just ruined my day... :(

“Ford determined it wasn't worth the money to substantially differentiate Ford from Mercury,” said Bob Casey, curator of transportation at The Henry Ford museum in Dearborn, Mich.

The only thing I would consider ugly from mercury is the turtle-body remake of the Taurus, the 02' or so Sable...

But we're losing much more, they could have made a whole nother car segment to take over where GM closed pontiac and saturn etc, (though unnecessary) they could have released a Mustang-based Cougar since everyone seems to love retro-designed cars nowadays, they could have made it a more European type of styling brand, and brought a Mondeo or Falcon instead of the Milan etc..or hell with it, even make a two-seater only chick car call it a Capri for all I care, just something more than axe-ing it and killing 70+ yrs worth of a name and jobs and options and all..ughh

Actually the '05 is styled like the '03 & '04, but you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference from '06-up... Guess you can tell I like 'em as well...

I was surprised though that the '11 we rented rode so much softer than my '07... Firmness on a scale of 1-10 with that '11 being a 1 and my Marauder a 10, the '07 is at least a 7... My '07 is firm enough that the mother-in-law doesn't like it, she'd rather ride in the marshmallow '98...

From todays paper...

ST. THOMAS — The St. Thomas Ford Assembly Plant has an extra two weeks of life, but workers aren’t holding out hopes the move means the Talbotville plant won’t shut its doors.
Dennis McGee, president of CAW Local 1520, said union officials were told during meetings with the company in late December the plant will stay open an extra two weeks.
The facility was to shut its doors Aug. 31, but that’s now moved to Sept. 16.
“It’s two more weeks of pay, for sure. Any extension is obviously good for us, for the members. We wish it wasn’t just another two weeks but another two months, or two years, but it’s something anyway,” McGee said.
But he’s not exactly sure why the company made the move.
“I don’t recall them saying why. I’m not sure if has to do with (increased) orders or not.”
A representative of Ford Canada was not immediately available for comment.
While McGee said workers are pleased to have some extra work, he doesn’t think it’s a glimmer of hope the plant will stay open.
“I just don’t see it being an ongoing thing where they come back and say another couple weeks here or there, another month, I just don’t see it happening,” McGee said. “They are moving in the Taurus direction (for police vehicles) and they told us that right from Day 1.”
At the beginning of 2010, the company officially confirmed to local politicians production at the facility would cease at the end of August 2011.
The company cited a need to consolidate its North American and European markets to be more competitive and efficient, as well as a refocusing on non-truck product lines. That’s when production of the Lincoln Town Car and Crown Victoria, favoured by North American police forces and taxi companies, will end.
The St. Thomas assembly plant produced the Grand Marquis until last fall when the Mercury production line was phased out.
