View Full Version : Hood "Float"

Noticed that my hood "floats" sort of like its not latched down completely. It certainly is, but it really bugs me. Its been like this since I bought her in late august 2010, but have not been driving it alot. Now that its getting light earlier and staying lighter longer, I am noticing it when I do drive her to and from work. I notice it more so on the drivers side, but that may only be because I am usually the only one in it and never sat in the passenger seat. Has anyone had this issue and is there a fix? I just need somewhere to start.

Thanks!!

are all your rubber bump stops in place?, also are the height adjusters set properly?

I dont get what you mean....does the hood look like it sits higher than the fenders or header? if so you may want to look at lowering your bumper stops...

Adjust the latch & front bumpers / stops.

Also install some bumpers on the right & left sides of the fenders.

See thats the thing. All my front bumpers (adjusters) are in place and flush, but I dont have any rubber "bumpers" like I had on my fox mustangs. I think I know the piece you are talking about. Its all rubber and slides in a groove on the fender correct? If so, no, I dont have ANY.

No , the hood sits flush and perfect, not up over the fender. But when I drive down the road, the side of the hood creeps up and down, or "floats", repeatedly about 1/8 to a 1/4 inch while riding.

I installed a rubber bumper from one of my mustangs but that made her sit too high so i thought it wasnt supposed to be there.

I never had any problems with "floating" without extra bumpers. I did develop the chirp when I replaced the hood so I put in the bumpers at that point.

Air ride going nutz on the hood.

Even if the hood sits flush, they can work down and it will float around. Push down on the corner of the hood. If there is any play, they need to be adjusted. My hood did that and I backed my corner bumpers out a few turns and it doesn't anymore. Makes you kind of nervous even though you know it's not going to pop up.

It does make me nervous. I did check and reset adjustment shortly after I got the car but still did it.

Wow! yesterday, I dealt with either the laziest or thickest parts guy at a dealership ever! I called Westway Ford in Irving TX since its right down the road from where I work and gave Cledus Slackjaw the part number. "Too short" Im told. Told him it may be listed as a fastener and asked if he could check. "Nope! not coming up!" Ok, how about looking it up by application? "I know the part youre talking about, not listed for your car." Can you look it up in the parts catalog using a book? "Sorry dont have any" (really? REALLY??) Ok, lets try another application. How about a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis or a 2003 Ford Crown Victoria? "Nope! Still nothing. If you can get the rest of the part number, let me know."

Click. (moron)

Called Grand Prairie Ford Parts. Before I can even finish my sentence, gentleman says "No its a good part number, came right up for me!" Within 2 minutes...2 MINUTES...he told me he doesnt have any, no one local has any except one in Carrollton (too far for me), but using the nationwide locater he can have a set to me by Monday if I can wait. I said "how much?" "$2.80 per set" he tells me. "Great I will take two sets. Do I need to pay for them before you order them?" "Normally yes, but I dont think 6 bucks is gonna bring the dealership to its knees" he joked.

Isnt it just funny how some people just take their job more seriously than others?

And when will people realize that today its a $2.80 hood bumper, but tomorrow it could be an aluminator???

I thought Pep Boys and Autozone cornered the market on these type of people...

But Im just sayin!!!
