My rims have been powder coated (clear) for a few years. However the nationally known site that did it did a very nice job on the fronts, but an incredibly crappy job on the rears (this is the place that also widened the rears). So the rear clear coat is peeling badly.

I thought about having them polished and re-coated, but now I am wondering about painting them black - that mottled textured black with a clear coat or thick enough to be nigh-indestructible.

While I am at it I might do the window trim.

I am in the Midwest, but can ship of course.

Has anyone done something like this? Where? Did you like it? And how much was it?

I am trying to figure out the cost difference vs. just buying another set of rims.

Thanks

You mentioned painting them black, but have you considered chroming as an option? Chrome rims beat the pants off the clearcoated OEM finish, IMO.

OK, in for consideration. What does it usually run?

I still think I might go black, but I'll have to ponder.

I'll see what I can track down.

How about black chrome. It would require the chrome finish applied first then a smoked clear over top. Check out a company called east coast powdercoat. Location is in MD. A little far for you, but their quality of work looks good. I have seen their work on vehicles at car shows around me.

Andrew, stop down to Wheelers at 100 E 5th some day and I will show you the black chrome wheel in the showroom. I am thinking of having this done to the street-lites on the blue car...

OOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Black chrome!

That might be the ticket.

As far as distance, shipping is shipping for the most part and quality is worth a couple hundred miles more.

Dangit - too many things rattling around in my head.

I remember reading something about difference OEM MM wheels vs. replacements - like one is cast and one is alloy, or something? I read in older threads that the OEMs are one and the Mustang replacements are the other (and I don't know enough about them to know what the measurable difference is), but now I can't remember which is which, and from what I am reading it makes a difference in what can be done to them.

Anyone know this?

OEMs are forged aluminum alloy = very strong.
The questionable replacements are cast aluminum = not as strong. I don't think I would try to widen the cast wheels IMHO.
Not sure about the finish on the replacements. I've heard reports they don't look/shine as well as MM OEMs.

You are correct, i have a cast wheel for spare and you can tell the difference on the finish from a mile away.

Things go the way I hope, I will be sending mine out.

From what I've read online, basically they chrome the rim and then spray a "black clear coat over" them.

My recent contact was talking, highly polishing them and a clear powder coat.

I would buy a set of black rims from one of the many wheel distributors on the WWW and mothball my stockers, they are becoming rarer and rarer and I wouldn't modify a stock set just because of the rarity. (Except for widened rears!!!):burnout:

If I recoat them with another finish, the finish can always be stripped off and I can repolish the aluminum, NBD.

I have some good leads so far, so hopefully a quality solution exists that doesn't break the bank.

I have had the thought of black chrome w/ widend rears bouncing around since I bought the car. Can anyone photochop it on a MM?

Hmmm. black chrome.:hmmm: I'll be really honest, I am gonna have a hard time removing the 16" black steelies this year. I am really starting to like the "blackened" look! Ofcourse, a 20"X10" foose nitrous in black would be even better...:cool4:
