Just had the thrush welded installed and sounds pretty good for being cheap mufflers about $30 a piece :banana2:

Agreed, but at $25 - $30 a piece, I can about guarantee you're not buying the cutting edge of acoustical technology... ;)

True, that.
I haven't run a car with glass packs for years, but back in the day, they were LOUD; especially after getting few miles on 'em and burning out the fiberglass.
Kinda like this...

yeah but paying a lot more for a muffler does not make it last longer, people i know who installed flowmasters rusted out in a couple of years,my cherrybomb turbos (not the long red ones of back in the day)are holding up good and sound way better than stock ones.i have the small case ones like 13 inches long.too each his own....

Not saying expensive mufflers are better than inexpensive ones by any means. All depends what you're looking for. Depending on materials used, service conditions, and driving habits, expensive mufflers can rust out real quick.
But then again, steel shelled muffler construction, on a car that operates in a corrosive environment (i.e. salted roads, or near the ocean), running duty cycles that doesn't allow the exhast system to heat up and evaporate out condensation will rust out either cheap or expensive mufflers darn fast. Big difference is that the cheaper mufflers are usually louder from the get-go.
As far as sounding "way better than stock ones," I'd say cherrybomb turbos are probably a lot louder than OEM, but that doesn't make them "better" unless loud sound is what you're looking for. ;)
I love the way ImpalaSlayer's car sounds at an idle, and when he nails it, but it's loud in the cabin, at pretty much all RPM levels; not my preference.
Also, loud usually = lots of attention. That too may, or may not, be desirable, depending on who's giving you the attention. http://media.bigoo.ws/content/smile/car/car_34.gif -------> http://media.bigoo.ws/content/smile/fighting/fighting_57.gif (http://www.bigoo.ws/code/preview/221026.htm) ------> ;)
As said, to each his own. Years ago, I really liked loud (had a '65 GTO running little more than straight pipes), now, subdued loud is more my style.

glasspacks ain't exactly what they used to be.
I knew a guy that lost his muffler on his '92 or some year like that accord, he replaced it with a glasspack because it's probably the cheapest muffler you can buy. You honestly can't tell a difference. Resonators and cats of course help with that fact, but point being the sound and volume isn't all in the muffler with those things...

i see trucks with glasspacks all the time around here. it usually is a high school kid or a good ol' boy wih a mullet.
about flowmasters, rusting and the loud idle are the biggest reason why i wouldnt buy them. go stainlessand dont look back

way to loud and not going anywhere

I've got glasspacks on my 77 F150, and it sounds great without being too loud. They're long and that keeps them quiet.
Seems like the whole exhaust thing is as much magic and luck as it is science. I've heard some great sounding cars on here. I'd like mine louder, but not so much in the cabin.

Thrush 2 chamber welded and aluminized. Basically they are a cheap Chinese knock off of Flowmaster.

So exactly what size and model Thrush did you put in? My MM's in the local shop for a few days and if I knew exactly what to order I'd have my guy throw in a set.
Length, ID/OD? Maybe a model #?
Thanks!

Hmm - the Thrush is an offset outlet, and the Aero AT2525 is center outlet. They can't both be a straight bolt in. Is the Thrush a straight bolt-in without having to monkey with the rest of the exhaust?

yeah I installed backwards but didn't see that there was anything that would be hurt from doing that and they sound good

No muffler is a straight bolt-in. I had center in-out on my old Flowmasters, no problem installing those and same thing with my Aero Turbines.

They have an inlet and outlet for a reason, installing it backwards can choke up the system even more. If it's a straight-thru muffler without a resonator or an air foil inside (Aero Turbines) then it doesn't matter on the direction. If it's a chamber muffler is makes a world of difference because of the way the inside of the muffler is designed with the channels and chambers to direct airflow correctly.
Borrowing the pictures from "malibuguy" who has done several CAM members full exhaust systems including mine.

Just did it. Thrush welded 17655. They had the correct offset inlet and center outlet. $39 ea at advance auto, minus a coupon for for $25 off they came out to about $27. $60 to install at the local muffler shop.
Not nearly as loud as I thought they'd be. Looks like I might have to find a shop to remove the rear cats. Maybe I should have done that first....

Had the rear cats cut off last weekend. Sounds pretty good now. Idle is still pretty quiet, I was actually surprised by that. Has a decent tone once you get on it. No drone.
So my total was:
Thrush turbo mufflers: $60 (Note these are not straight through glass-packs, so there's no pop and crackle when you let off)
Install at muffler shop: $60
Rear cat delete: $60
I probably would have saved a little money by having the mufflers and cats done at the same time, but the muffler shop wasn't willing to do the cats. I had to go to a local hole-in-the-wall shop for that.

Decent deal. The old cats (2) are worth $100 cash. Those are the same mufflers I have- Dynomax version adds the flow director and better packing.
Dynomax bought thrush, so when you order the thrush turbo you get the Dynomax minus a few features. I think I paid $50 each for mine. Keep in mind too when the shop cuts your cats you are replacing the factory stainless with lesser quality pipe and welds that may rust, very few shops have stainless.
