Whats up MM.net, this is my first post & Im new to this so hopefully yall can help because i have no knowledge about rear ends. I hate to waste a whole thread on these simple questions that'll probably be answered in the first 5 posts, but i need :help:
Im thinking about buying 4:10 gears for my '03 and my question is- Does that have a drastic effect on highway driving?? I'm on the highway a lot in the summer, so that really matters.
I also want to upgrade the axles. What all needs to be changed (if anything) to run 31-splines?
What's the best/cheapest price & place to buy gears/axles from?
What brand should i get?
ok i think thats it. thanks in advance for your help:beer:

Congrats and welcome to the site.
4.10s are the gear that the car should have came with from the factory. They will knock off about 1 pg and you'll be turning about 2300 RPM at 75mph. It won't be a drastic difference in drivability, you'll just feel more pep in everyday driving and off the line. If you plan on running 31 spline, you'll need axles and a 31 spline carrier because the Marauder runs a 28 spline. The 28 spline works fine unless you plan to upgrade and put more power down. Axles Im not 100% positive sure where to get 31 spline. Some members picked up 28 spline axles off ebay for a geat price and had no issues. For gears I suggest the Ford racing gear set. You can purchase them along with a install kit from Sparta performance who is a vendor on the site.

I had stock in my 04 and now have4.10's in my 03. I lost just under a mile to the gallon with my driving style. On the highway, my RPM's are wee bit higher. It feels stronger off the line.
As for what others will tell you, search is your friend.

searching will provide hours of opinions. That being said 4.10s only increased my freeway rpms a little. At 75 I'm at 2500rpm or something, at 80 it's still under 3k.
switching to 31spline really isn't needed until you're making a lot of power, but that's just me

You will need a tuner to correct the speedometer if you go to the 4:10's. A tune is also a good thing to get anyways. Check the vendors on site for good tunes.

Thats about an hour & 45 mins from me, close enough. I see the tune costs $399, how about the gears & installation?

Welcome aboard. Enjoy the site. I am still on the fence about 4.10s even with a full rear end to install.

Guaranty you'll fall off the fence on the 4.10 side!

If you you're going to increase the power of your car beyond that of simple bolt on's then you may want to go 31 spline. Some members have used Ford 31 spline axles that come on 05+ Crown Vic's, along with that you will need a 31 spline differential, the one from a Cobra Mustang will do. 4.10's a great gear for these cars and of course Ford Racing gears are the best. A complete install pack would be a great idea too just to make sure everything is new.

If you use the 31 splines from a 05+ Crown vic, you'll have to eliminate the parking brake assembly as the CV ones are a tad shorter.

That was my experience. The park-brake hasn't been missed. If you are driving down the road and apply the brake, you will see why they don't call it an emergency brake. The PB shoes are small & thin, and are not powerful enough to stop the car very well.

My opinion is that since you are having rearend work done, go ahead and upgrade to the 31 spline axles. Even if you never add prodigious power you will be able to without going into your rear again.

I agree--Ford has changed the gears inside the differential, apparently because of problems--the original gears are no longer available. Since all post Panthers have 31 spline axles, that also tells me they are a very good idea>
